Post-doctoral Scientist: Computational modeling of fluidic and optical systems

In this role the candidate will work as part of Amgen Process Developments Advanced Technology and Automation Group, based at our corporate headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California.
The ATA team is tasked with developing new manufacturing technologies. This project relates specifically to automated visual inspection, with particular focus on the fluid dynamics and optomechanical handling our products experience during this part of the manufacturing process.
The successful candidate will use contemporary computer modelling packages to simulate the physical forces and conditions our products experience during automated inspection a key stage of the manufacturing process. These models will then be evaluated against home-grown, lab-based test systems. The expectation is that a first-principles, science-based approach will lead to insights and improvements that we can then work to scale-up and deploy into production.
The ATA group is a diverse, multi-disciplinary team made up of mechanical and electrical engineers, chemical engineers, physicists, computer scientists and manufacturing experts. The candidate will have the full support of the team in developing and realizing their experiments. The candidate will have ample opportunity to learn about our industry and add to their portfolio of skills.
During the course of this project it is expected that the candidate will develop working relationships with other relevant teams throughout the company.
It is also expected that over the course of this position the candidate will contribute both to peer-reviewed scientific publications and Amgens portfolio of intellectual property.
This postdoctoral assignment is intended to last for 2 years, with the possibility to extend for a third year.
- Ph.D. at the time of appointment
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics or related discipline.
- Proven track record in publishing high-quality research in respected academic journals or conferences
- Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (ANSYS, COMSOL, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM)
- Experience in optical modelling (Zemax, COMSOL)
- Programming proficiency in Python, MATLAB or LabVIEW
- Experience in applying contemporary deep learning techniques to image processing
- Experience in developing lab-based experiments to compliment theoretical/computational models.
