We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.

Tumor Intrinsic Translational Research Group Lead (Senior Principal Scientist)

The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies. Comprised of scientists across multiple disciplines, we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first-in-human studies.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual with translational expertise to join the TME TRC Translational Research team at Bristol Myers Squibb in Redwood City, CA. This individual will lead the Tumor Intrinsic group within the Translational Research department that also includes Immuno-Oncology, Translational Stromal and Biomarker Technologies & Assay development groups. The Tumor Intrinsic translational team works in close collaboration with the Cancer Biology discovery scientists to drive biomarker identification for early programs for tumor intrinsic targets that derive their dependency from the relationship of the tumor to the host and tumor microenvironment. In addition the group works collaboratively with the Translational Development team to build the deep, mechanistically driven translational packages that are required to support indication selection, target engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarker assays for oncology-focused programs within the TME TRC. As lead of the Tumor Intrinsic Translational Group you will bring scientific experience in translational research with an emphasis on Oncology/Immuno-Oncology biomarkers, and will have an in-depth knowledge of the steps required to progress a program from preclinical to clinical stage.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 4-6 researchers (including PhDs), responsible for driving the early translational research plans for the tumor intrinsic cancer biology programs within the TME TRC portfolio.

  • Accountable for establishing and executing on the scientific translational plan for understanding indication selection, target engagement, receptor occupancy and pharmacodynamic readouts that can be measured in clinical trials.

  • Accountable for design of hypothesis-driven studies using human samples to inform pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, and patient stratification/selection including development of relevant ex vivo translational models as needed.

  • Partner closely with cancer biology scientists from TME-TRC, bioinformatics, translational research technology experts, pharmacologists etc to leverage any needed resources from additional teams to ensure translational plans are executed on effectively and in a timely manner.

  • Effectively collaborate in highly matrixed organization to drive the advancement of therapeutic candidates.

  • Experienced translational scientist with 7+ years of relevant experience in tumor biology (including in the industry setting), and a strong background in cancer genetics and cancer cell signaling.

  • Experience in oncology drug discovery and development, with strong understanding of the role of translational research in the drug development process, and expertise in biomarker discovery, biomarker assay development

  • Working knowledge of all functional areas of drug development, including biology, clinical development, and diagnostic development including fit for purpose assay validation principles for clinical assays.

  • Familiarity with biomarker assay development (flow, tissue-based and peripheral immunoassays, genomics, transcriptomics) to guide experimental prioritization.

  • Experience working with primary human samples, including designing and conducting biomarker and/or mechanistic studies and development of ex vivo translational models designed to address key translational hypotheses.

  • Proven track record of handling multiple high priority tasks in parallel with internal and external collaborators including CROs and academics.
