Senior Director, Strategy & Consulting (Vaccines and Hospital BU)
Reporting to the SVP, Strategy & Consulting, this role is responsible for working with the Vaccines and Hospital BUs to shape, develop, and enable execution of strategies that will advance and grow the business. The scope of the role will include all areas under the purview of the group, including research, development, and commercial. For any R&D-related strategies and projects, this role will collaborate closely with the ‘Corporate and GPD’ Strategy lead/team within the Strategy & Consulting organization. While this position reports into the Strategy & Consulting team organizationally, this person will work closely with their triad leadership teams in order to stay connected to key business challenges and opportunities, and ensure that there is alignment with strategic priorities, or make adjustments to priorities when necessary. The scope of the role will focus on three key accountabilities: 1) facilitate the development of the BU strategic plan, providing a consistent structure to the plans done across Pfizer, 2) manage projects related to key strategic issues/business priorities, and 3) provide insights into market and competitive signals that could impact business performance or strategic direction. From time to time, this role may also be called upon to lead important cross-BU Biopharma commercial strategic initiatives.
Partner with BU Global Presidents, other BU leaders and/or corporate functions to develop business strategies at a global, and where appropriate, regional level. Identify key strategic imperatives and capabilities required to achieve these imperatives.
Facilitate completion of multi-year commercial strategic plans, as well as implementation plans that enable robust execution of these strategies. Support the annual BU operating plan process, as needed.
Lead or actively participate in a portfolio of projects that provide insight and direction for key strategic levers such as market development, customer needs assessment, patient segmentation, competitive advantage, market and/or product prioritization. Actively analyze and translate impact of these levers into appropriate financial measures (e.g., revenue growth, margin, ROI, etc.)
Provide perspectives on the potential impact of external market and competitive signals that could impact future business performance.
Develop a deep expertise in market dynamics in order to identify market trends and appropriately assess opportunities and guide strategic direction.
Engage with the triads and/or corporate function leads to understand business needs and represent current status of opportunity evaluations.
Develop external relationships that provide outside-in perspectives on key aspects of the business units you support.
Collaborate with other strategy leads to identify opportunities across Pfizer for alignment or synergies across strategic imperatives.
Actively participate in the Strategy & Consulting team, supporting Pfizer strategy through the perspective and experience of the organizations you support.
Lead and develop a team of ~8 colleagues, coaching and developing them to build capability and performance. Create an engaging and productive work environment where team members are encouraged and motivated to collaborate and excel.
BA/BS – required, life sciences degree helpful. MBA preferred.
10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Understands trends in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, aware of competitor strategies, knowledge of healthcare dynamics in the US and other major global markets, as well as understands key aspects of drug development, commercialization and business development processes.
Ability to influence and persuade key stakeholders at all levels of the organization (ELT, BU Presidents, department leaders, and functional counterparts). Must be able to influence executive leaders in Commercial and R&D.
Demonstrates strong strategic thinking skills, as evidenced by the ability to identify and develop relevant strategic frameworks, alternative scenarios, analyze implications, and develop recommendations for direction or action.
Ability to understand and translate market and competitive dynamics into strategic implications for the BUs.
Good understanding of finance and P&L implications of any strategy.
Ability to work with complex information and distill into a framework that helps facilitate decision-making.
Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead without direct authority.
Strong executive presence and communication/presentation skills sufficient to effectively address Global BU Leadership, ELT members, and external audiences.
Prior experience in consulting is preferred.
