Sr Director, Business Development Assessment, Inflammation & Immunology and Internal Medicine
This role is dynamic, fast-paced, highly collaborative, and directly linked to making external investments critical to our business. Reporting to the VP, Business Assessment, the Senior Director (SD) is responsible for partnering with WW Business Development (WWBD) and the Internal Medicine and Inflammation and Immunology Triads to effectively champion external opportunities and lead commercial assessments ensuring that there is rigorous analysis to inform critical business development investment decisions and structure appropriate deal terms. The SD will evaluate potential equity investments, product licensing, and bolt-on M&A opportunities, and actively lead or participate in discussions that determine the potential value of the partnership. S/he will also be expected to cover other disease area opportunities as well as potential M&A evaluations as needed.
The SD will also provide strategic input into trade off decisions that may be required between investment options, ensure consistency in assessment and forecasting approaches across external or internal investment options as well as in-line asset forecasts as needed, and present analysis and recommendations to executive governance.
Develop commercial assessments of global and regional business development (BD) opportunities and present recommendations to senior management governance bodies
Collaborate closely with WWBD lead to develop the Business Development strategies for both the Internal Medicine and Inflammation and Immunology businesses, evaluate opportunities identified through search and evaluation, generate a commercial perspective on potential value and overall recommendation for opportunity to governance bodies (BU level and Pfizer level)
Synthesize inputs from expert stakeholders on the potential clinical development plan, technical profile, and commercial evaluation (e.g. Commercial Development, Customer Analytics, Medical Affairs, Patient & Health Impact, Global Marketing/Regional leaders, Global Product Development, Rare Disease Research Unit)
Determine the appropriate level of rigor and external insights/research required depending on the timeline and decision to be made; demonstrate the courage to recommend not moving forward with opportunities if appropriate
Develop analytically supported recommendations to facilitate investment trade off decisions across BU Business Development opportunities, as well as Business Development opportunities compared with internal pipeline investment
Manage matrixed Director and Senior Manager team members
12+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Understands trends in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, aware of competitor strategies, knowledge of healthcare dynamics in the US and other major global markets, understands the drug development process, and is attuned to market trends and strategies that could impact business development opportunities
Ability to provide objective recommendations for investment factoring in strategies at a Category level and overall Pfizer growth strategy, strong presentation skills to executive level leadership at Pfizer
Proficiency in leading financial valuation, forecasting, business proposal and/or other related projects; working with complex information and distill into an analytic framework that helps facilitate decision making; synthesizing new areas, technologies and opportunities for executive level briefings
Must be able to influence executive commercial and research leaders at all levels and engage them at appropriate times in the commercial assessment process.
Must be able to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead with indirect authority; lead cross functional teams to deliver quick turnarounds often with limited information
Ability to think creatively and develop new solutions or approaches that will enable the teams to meet their new business goals
Experience in business development process, specifically in opportunity identification, commercial assessment, and deal structure; experience in all types of business development deals including acquisitions, divestitures, partnerships, joint ventures, and co-development opportunities
Prior experience in biopharma marketing, life sciences consulting, and/or financial services or other analytical profession
MBA or life sciences advanced degree
Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
