About the role

Sana Biotechnology has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Associate within the Cell Therapy Drug Product Development group. Under the supervision of the drug product development lead, you will perform experiments to support the development of formulation, fill and finish, and cryopreservation for our pipeline cell therapy drug products as well as conducting exploratory research. The Senior Research Associate is also expected to closely collaborate with multiple teams including Process Development and Analytical Development. You will report to the Senior Scientist, Cryopreservation. 

What you’ll do

  • Perform small- and large-scale formulation, fill and finish, and cryopreservation experiments on primary cells and/or cell lines
  • Conduct cell health and viability assessment, including cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and proliferation assays, and interpret flow cytometry data
  • Maintain culture of primary, immortalized and/or pluripotent stem cells
  • Perform data analysis and interpretation and draw main conclusions regarding progress and results of work
  • Make detailed observations and document experimental methods in an electronic laboratory notebook
  • Draft technical documents including reports, operating procedures, and master batch records

What we’re looking for

  • BSc. in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field plus 4 yrs or MSc. plus 1-2 yrs or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Prior experience working on formulation, fill and finish, and/or cryopreservation
  • >2 yrs of experience of mammalian cell culture with excellent aseptic cell culture technique
  • The candidate should be a team player, highly organized with excellent communication skills, demonstrate scientific rigor and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively work in multidisciplinary teams, meet deadlines, prioritize multiple projects, and engage in crucial conversations
  • Aptitude for working in a self-driven, performance/results-oriented, fast-paced matrix environment 

What will separate you from the crowd

  • Prior experience working on a clinical or commercial cell therapy manufacturing process
  • Knowledge of cryobiology with focus on cryopreservation methods and mechanisms of cryopreservation-induced cell injuries
  • Extensive hands-on experience working on formulation, fill and finish, and controlled rate freezing
  • Experience with analytical methods including:
    • Cell counts and viability using automated cell counters
    • Flow cytometry
    • Live cell-based assays, including Incucyte or Cytation 5
  • Knowledge of R, Python, JMP, Benchling and FlowJo software
  • Experience with evaluating and/or optimizing process parameters using Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Demonstrate technical curiosity and a continuous drive to learn new skills and techniques

What you should know

  • This position requires handling of human blood products.
  • Some weekend work is required
  • Work in a laboratory environment approximately 75% of the time
  • 10% travel anticipated
  • Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
