What You Will Achieve

The Senior Scientist will be responsible for the process development work of mRNA-based vaccines. The successful candidate will play an important role in developing purification processes of nucleic acid including DNA and mRNA. The Senior Scientist will also be working with fellow scientists to purify a variety of macromolecules including nucleic acids, antibodies, and recombinant proteins including enzymes. The job function requires judgment and innovation to achieve a solution within standard practices and procedures. Responsibilities will include designing and conducting experiments, tests, and analysis as part of a variety of research and development activities. The Senior Scientist will be expected to summarize, evaluate the study results, develop and test new hypotheses to improve the fundamental understanding of recovery and purification processes. The incumbent should possess a strong scientific knowledge in purification and nucleic acids. It is also expected that the incumbent will perform analysis / characterization of isolated macromolecules with various bioanalytical/biophysical methodologies. Careful documentation of work and presentation of data is required.

Your scientific judgment will be leveraged to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience. You will be forecasting and planning resource requirements for your project team. Your creativity in developing novel processes and new ideas will be used frequently. You will undertake mentoring activities to guide team members. It is your innovative scientific temperament that will help in making Pfizer ready to achieve new milestones and help patients across the globe.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Develop, optimize, and scale-up recovery/purification processes for isolation of nucleic acids and proteins.

  • Contribute and influence at the project team level.

  • Ability to troubleshoot scientific and technical challenges and contribute to their resolution.

  • Develop in-process analytical methods to monitor process performance or solve process issues.

  • Perform timely notebook entries and review for completed experiments.

  • Prepare internally reviewed technical reports, make oral presentations to scientists and management, and publish externally.

  • Mentor junior scientists and provide technical guidance/feedback when necessary

  • Collaborate with those from within the group, from other subdivisions of EBPD, from other divisions of Pfizer, and potentially from external partners.

Qualifications

Must-Have
  • Ph.D. and 0 - 2 years postdoctoral experience in industrial or academic setting.

  • Experience in purifying proteins or nucleic acids.

  • Proficiency with FPLC, column chromatography, filtration and relevant scientific software (eg. Unicorn).

  • Demonstrated ability to drive for results and drive innovative research programs independently.

  • Good understanding of protein (or RNA) biochemistry and analytics, including the recent scientific literature.

  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently and in a collaborative environment.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software.

  • Team worker.

Nice-to-Have
  • Background in nucleic acid, RNA biology, or Biophysics.

  • Hands on experience with mRNA purification.

  • Hands on experience with biophysical tools including CD, AUC, DSC etc.

  • Strong knowledge with RNA structure/folding.

  • Experience training junior scientists.
