About AbbVie
AbbVie’s mission is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that solve serious health issues today and address the medical challenges of tomorrow. We strive to have a remarkable impact on people’s lives across several key therapeutic areas: immunology, oncology, neuroscience, eye care, virology, women’s health and gastroenterology, in addition to products and services across its Allergan Aesthetics portfolio. Since 2013, AbbVie has expanded its commitment to the San Francisco Bay Area with the consolidation of three Bay Area facilities to a new Bay Area headquarters in South San Francisco. AbbVie employees in the Bay Area drive AbbVie’s research-based, innovation driven missions in healthcare. Specifically, Bay Area employees bring deep scientific expertise and commercial excellence to advance cancer care. Current oncology areas of focus include immuno-oncology, tumor targeting, tumor dependency and precision medicine. With facilities positioned in the heart of the biotechnology industry, we are able to collaborate with the best and brightest minds in oncology.

Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer. AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) moving into a brand-new site in South San Francisco and focusing on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie’s new South San Francisco, CA location.

We are looking for a talented and driven Scientist II / Senior Scientist I cancer biologist with substantial experience in target validation and mechanistic biology to join our dynamic target biology team in South San Francisco. The successful candidate will play a key role in the identification and validation of novel targets that present cancer selective dependencies such as synthetic lethality. The position requires excellent technical, multitasking skills and critical thinking, as well as the ability to help drive early-stage drug discovery by developing and implementing a variety of biochemical and cell-based methods to elucidate target function and enable small molecule screening efforts. Above all, we are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative individual with a passion for oncology research, who enjoys working in a fast-paced and highly dynamic working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing and executing experiments to inform cancer target biology using a variety of approaches, including CRISPR-mediated cell line engineering, analysis of signaling pathway and characterization of cell death mechanisms
  • Utilizing knockdown, knockout, knockin and over-expression of genes for target validation
  • Identifying and validating pharmacodynamic readouts for novel oncology targets
  • Oversee the generation and analysis of high-quality experimental data to identify and confirm the mechanism of action of lead compounds identified through target discovery efforts
  • Presenting data and findings across various platforms, including project teams and extended research and discovery organization meetings
  • Using decision making, organizations and communication skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues from cross-functional teams
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of new technologies and relevant scientific advances in tumor dependencies and its roles in cancer from literature and scientific meetings

Qualifications

  • MSc (Scientist II) or PhD (Senior Scientist I) with or without postdoctoral training in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field
  • A minimum of 4+ years of relevant laboratory experience, industry setting preferred
  • Extensive hands on experience in lentiviral production and transduction (BSL-2), stable cell line development and CRISPR-Cas9/Cas12 gene editing including validation using state-of-the-art and high-throughput techniques
  • Proficient in flow cytometry, western blotting, WES, ELISA and other cell and molecular biology techniques, including nucleofection/electroporation and 96wp 384-well plate formats
  • A strong record of achievement, including publications in high-impact journals
  • Exceptional scientific rigor and commitment to the highest-quality research with outstanding organizational abilities and scientific execution
  • Ability to manage more than one project at any given time and to work successfully in a cross-functional and highly collaborative team environment
  • Exceptional communication, both speech and writing, to a variety of audiences
