As a member of the scientific research team, the Senior Associate Scientist / Scientist I in Upstream  has a hands-on role executing lab scale bioreactors, collecting and processing samples, preparing fermentation experiment documents, and participating in data analysis and process development/improvement discussions. The  Senior Associate Scientist / Scientist I  provides principal scientist / senior management with technical proficiency, scientific creativity and professional concepts and procedures to solve methodical problem.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Carry out experiments and collect, process data under supervision of the principal scientist.

  • Understanding underlying science and fundamental concepts behinds the products in development.

  • Experimentally determine upstream conditions for microbial expression and specific to Synthorx platform.

  • Bioreactor setup, maintenance, and operation.

  • Sampling and sample analysis.

  • Mechanical and instrumentation troubleshooting.

  • Training of junior members.

  • Experimentally determine fermentation strategies to optimize yields for protein expression.

  • Contribute to fermentation process improvement activities using a data driven approach.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Platform and Target Development teams to ensure smooth continuity between fermentation and upstream and downstream technology processes.

  • Develop standard operating procedures, document protocols and technology transfer.

  • Prepare and present project updates to ensure timely delivery.

  • Maintain a high standard for quality control including up-to-date data records for all protein deliveries, including basic understanding of mass spectrometry methods for QC.

  • Troubleshoot challenging technical, experimental, and instrumental issues.

  • Consummate ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, cross-functional environment, with superior oral and written communication skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in biological science, chemical or biochemical engineering and 5+ years of lab experience or related field; OR MS and 2+ years experience  in  chemical or biochemical engineering of  bio-related fields.

  • Experience with E. coli-based protein expression is highly desirable. The knowledge and experience of eucaryotic expression (yeast, mammalian cell) is plus

  • Experience setting up and operating lab scale bioreactors (DasGIP, BioFlo, AMBER) is a highly desirable. Experience with multiple fermentation mode is plus.

  • Track record of running microbial fermentation processes in fermenter.

  • A strong understanding of cellular physiology to troubleshoot and improve existing cultivation models.

  • Experience developing methods for protein purification.

  • Familiarity with protocols involving extraction from inclusion bodies is a plus.

  • Experience in protein characterization (SDS PAGE, Western Blotting, quantification). Understanding of MS methods for QC is a plus.

  • Regular activities require ability to communicate effectively and rapidly reprioritize to match dynamic and demanding timelines.

ADA Notations:

  • Frequent communication (talking/hearing).

  • Regular sitting and reaching with arms.

  • Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Computer use: 30% of the time.

  • Noise conditions: Normal office / lab environment.

  • May work near moving mechanical parts or in a  laboratory setting with chemicals, unpleasant odors, and in areas requiring personal protective equipment.

  • Interaction with laboratory equipment, samples, supplies, and laboratory personnel may be required whereby appropriate precautions are to be taken per the Company’s Safety and Injury, Illness and Prevention Plans.

  • Travel: Occasional.
