In this vital role you will lead cross-functional teams in internal project and external relationship management for a variety of initiatives across academia and industry. Amgen is seeking an R&D Operations Manager to lead cross-functional teams in internal project and external relationship management for a variety of initiatives across academia and industry. The Manager will report to the Senior Manager of R&D Operations within the R&D Strategy and Operations organization. Candidates can be based remotely.

The Manager will work towards multiple goals including augmenting access to external innovation and knowledge, as well as strengthening Amgens scientific reputation. As a leader, the candidate will build upon existing initiatives and programs, liaising with key cross-functional partners, while also identifying new opportunities and relationships to develop. Current partnerships within the broader team include early R&D external collaborations (alliance and program management); incubator and startup sponsorships; Amgen scientific conferences; university education (lectures, site tours, panels); Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DI&B) fellowship efforts. The candidate will manage stakeholders by clearly communicating status, issues, implications, and recommendations.

Successful candidates will have opportunities to grow both within the role and the broader R&D Strategy and Operations organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an integrator across multiple R&D and Amgen-wide initiatives

  • Liaise with external stakeholders in academia and industry, as well as with internal teams across a variety of functions

  • Manage projects within established scope, schedule, and budget, aligning tactics with strategy, managing change and conflict in a matrix environment

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and motivate project stakeholders to gain alignment on goals and deliverables

  • Support the External Engagement Senior Manager to define where, when, and how to support R&D collaborations and other initiatives

  • Identify new initiatives to support, crafting business cases, identifying tradeoffs, and supporting any necessary change management

  • Initiatives / partnering will have an emphasis on Amgen colleagues and external stakeholders based in the San Francisco Region

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of experience Or

  • Masters degree and 4 years of experience Or

  • Bachelors degree and 6 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years in the Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical industry serving in a cross-functional role

  • Advanced life science degree or equivalent experience (i.e., strong scientific acumen)

  • Drug Development knowledge with basic to strong understanding of activities within Research, Clinical Development, and Medical, as well as Amgens overarching Commercialization process, or demonstrated experience supporting research partnership activities

  • Strong competencies in planning, project management, and organization with the ability to lead multiple activities and resources while maintaining a focus on quality

  • Proven ability to grasp general knowledge of multiple disciplines

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to structure vaguely defined problems and implement practical solutions

  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and executive presence across functions and across different levels of leadership

  • Independent, motivated, flexible, and resourceful to navigate a matrix environment

  • Basic understanding of intellectual property

  • Network with San Francisco-based academic institutions and industry partners
