ROLE SUMMARY

The Digital Design Strategy Lead role in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecules (PSSM) group is responsible for defining the strategy and implementation of key initiatives that enable the design of new materials, products and processes using computational sciences and advanced predictive tools based on first-principle and data-driven approaches. Digital Design is a core focus area that supports PSSM’s overall Digital Xceleration strategy to drove molecules to market faster for the benefit of patients.

The selected individual will be responsible for leading and coordinating activities in the Digital Design strategy area by orchestrating activities across four work streams that include infrastructure, scientific initiatives, workforce and workflows. 

In addition, the individual will partner across the community to ensure the core components and culture of Digital Design are integrated within the broader PSSM and enterprise level digital transformation initiatives. 

The selected individual will achieve this through the following activities:

  • Partnering with the ARD, CRD, DPD and DPS lines in securing the right resources to integrate models within the respective workflows and build the cross-line aspects of the workforce development plan
  • Building and leading an engaged SME community who will embrace the digital design vision and act collectively to deliver the vision
  • Establishing an effective framework that will support and ensure the broader adoption of the digital design concepts within PSSM workflows
  • Co-ordination of key aspects with Pfizer Digital and other stakeholders and partner lines (such as MedSci and PGS)

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the Digital Design community in PSSM through the regular governance meetings (Steering Team, Core Team etc.)
  • Work with line SMEs to implement appropriate hardware and infrastructure platforms to support computational modeling
  • Partner with Pfizer Digital to establish a modern infrastructure footprint (e.g. Cloud vs High Performance Computing) for computational modeling and simulations
  • Develop a white paper or strategic plan (or contribute digital design components to such a plan) and drive change through a comprehensive, cross-line accelerated implementation plan
  • Involve all relevant stakeholders to refine objectives, deliverables, project plans and targeted outcomes of each Digital Design work streams as required
  • Identify and foster internal collaboration opportunities and coordinate dependencies and across the infrastructure, scientific initiatives, workflow and workforce themes
  • Identify and manage external ecosystem opportunities and coordinate dependencies across scientific initiatives, workflow and workforce themes
  • Identify, escalate and manage risks to minimize delays that would impede adoption of the digital design philosophy across PSSM workflows and community.
  • Stay connected with the SME network providing targeted leadership on key themes (e.g. integrated AI plan, model verification and impact of modelling).  Use external consultants tactically to drive engagement around the white paper
  • Maintain engagement with key stakeholders beyond PSSM to enhance connections to Med Sci and PGS respectively.
  • Develop a vibrant external ecosystem with capabilities that complements our internal efforts.  Deliver a plan for colleagues to maintain and evolve to meet emerging business needs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree and 12+ years of experience within Pharmaceutical Sciences discipline with extensive knowledge and skill in the application of computational chemistry/computational sciences/simulations & modeling
  • Proven track record of delivery and application of new and diverse computational methods to project challenges in the workflows and strong publication record in the area of computational pharmaceutical sciences
  • Highly organized and significant experience in initiating, driving and delivering complex strategic programs both internally within Pfizer (essential).
  • Proven ability working in matrixed environment with diverse groups including computational subject matter experts, project scientists and senior management
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, collaborate and influence at all levels within the organization and across the external ecosystem
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, considering various frames of reference and ensuring cross-functional alignment in decision-making
  • Strong strategic and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to synthesize concepts across the digital transformation community and effectively communicate them to all appropriate stakeholders at various levels within the origination and beyond (external funding bodies etc.)
  • Self-starter and self-directed with the skills to take a concept, refine into fully developed idea and build out into detailed plan for execution

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in a related area and 15+ years of experience is desirable
  • Highly organized and significant experience in initiating, driving and delivering complex strategic programs both internally within Pfizer and across the external ecosystem
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing processes
  • Experience working in various hardware and software platforms (High Performance Computing, Cloud etc.)
  • Prior experience with Digital Twins and end-to-end, connected models
