Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. (NASDAQ: PACB) is helping scientists forge a better understanding of biology by providing a unique long-read sequencing technology that generates more complete and accurate data, giving them more insights. Our sequencing systems allow scientists to characterize genomes, transcriptomes, and epigenomes from any organism. Scientists use our technology in areas such as human biomedical research, plant and animal sciences, and microbiology and infectious disease studies. Become part of the new paradigm in long-read sequencing and help shape the future of genomic study by joining the Pacific Biosciences team.

Pacific Biosciences is looking for an experienced staff opto-mechanical engineer to design and implement optical subsystems for our next generation SMRT sequencing instruments. This person will work with optical engineers & scientists to understand and refine requirements, design hardware, drive interdisciplinary design reviews and implement solutions from an optimal blend of off-the-shelf and custom components. This person should be comfortable working in both loosely defined environments where the design starts at and driving through completion after handoff to the manufacturing team.

This successful candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and excel in effective collaboration with optical, electrical, software, manufacturing, and systems subject matter experts within the department as well as program management. The candidate must feel comfortable inspiring and leading through innovation and discovery.

Ideally the candidate has experience with semiconductor capital equipment, laboratory instruments or similar products.

Responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with optical engineers and scientists to develop beam forming and optical steering hardware
  • Define, design and develop precision and miniature components and mechanical assemblies
  • Define, design and develop opto-mechanical modules that incorporate components such as complex lenses and plano optics
  • Develop fixtures and processes for precision opto-mechanical assembly
  • Evaluate suitability of design solutions by performing detailed thermal, stress and modal analysis
  • Work on projects from concept development and bring them to completion at the product delivery stage, including initial debugging and sustaining efforts side by side with the manufacturing team

Position Requirements:
  • Education: BS Mechanical Engineering (advanced degree preferable) with at least 5 years of experience in the design, development and fabrication of complex opto-mechanical subsystems and precision mechanics
  • Knowledge of stress and thermal analysis. Understanding of how mechanical structures and environments impact the performance of refractive and reflective optics
  • > 6,000 seat hours in SolidWorks
  • Experience with precision mechanics including bearings, actuators, encoders
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in the context of complex imaging and illumination systems
  • Familiarity with optical design packages (OSLO, Zemax…)
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Understanding, articulating, & managing competing requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills a must. Demonstrated experience in working within a multi-disciplinary team in a fast paced, technically challenging environment. Relevant product development and / or industry experience required
  • Experience working with MEMS scale optics a plus
  • Experience with high volume molded optics is a plus
