About the role

The Computational Biologist will work closely with scientists and computational biologists to analyze NGS genomics data and develop bioinformatics methods to solve exciting and challenging problems in cell and gene therapy, immunology, and stem cell biology. You will develop workflow from FASTQ to variant calling and annotation to analyze somatic and germline variants in human genomes. You should be able to partner effectively with the Analytical Genomics team to design appropriate studies and analyze genomics data, and the Computational Engineering team to refactor and automate analysis pipelines as appropriate. You should be a team player and fantastic at cross-functional communication. The ability to be flexible, to learn from and teach others genetics & genomics, and to work in a highly collaborative environment will be critical to success. This position reports to the Principal Scientist, Computational Biology.

What you'll do
  • Develop analysis workflows from existing tools or modify existing methods to analyze NGS data, such as WES/WGS, targeted sequencing and bulk RNA sequencing. This includes development of novel Bioinformatics methods as needed to answer platform and biological questions to meet company objectives. Demonstrate validity of methods through prototypes and benchmarking using appropriate controls
  • Develop and implement study designs to benchmark analysis workflows
  • Work with other computational biologists and computational engineers to deliver production pipelines
  • Partner with groups in Cell Therapy, Cell Engineering, and Technical Operations to design studies, recommend appropriate assays, and analyze and interpret data from WGS/WES, aCGH, targeted oncogene panels, RNA sequencing and epigenomic sequencing.
  • Proper documentation of code, workflows, and analyses including study reports for nonclinical and clinical studies and regulatory filings
  • Communicate to a broad audience with a range of technical, analytical, and biological expertise and present results on a regular basis at various group meetings

What we're looking for
  • PhD in computational biology, genetics, bioinformatics, statistics, or related scientific discipline and up to 2+ yrs academic or industry experience. BA and/or MS plus 7+ yrs or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Strong scientific background including an understanding of molecular biology and genomics
  • Hands-on experience with all steps for the analysis of WGS/WES data and/or targeted panels
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python and/or R
  • Routine use of version control such as git
  • Experience with high performance computing and proficiency in *ix
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and problem-solving
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible, and able to prioritize and manage several fast-paced projects concurrently
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • The candidate should be collaborative, a team player and demonstrate curiosity
  • Ability to engage in crucial conversations - providing and receiving feedback

What will separate you from the crowd
  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud computing platforms
  • Familiarity with workflow languages such as Nextflow
  • Experience with variant calling low frequency somatic mutations
  • Experience with product development and/or Regulatory filings a plus
