Pacific Biosciences is looking for an experienced staff / senior electrical engineer with strong FPGA background to architect and implement electronic subsystems for our next-generation SMRT sequencing instruments. This person will work closely with other FPGA engineers, software engineers, and systems engineers to understand and refine requirements, document, and champion FPGA-related architecture options, drive interdisciplinary design reviews and implement solutions on our high-performance FPGA platforms.

This successful candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and excel in effective collaboration with other subject matter experts within the department as well as program management. The candidate must feel comfortable inspiring and leading through innovation and discovery. Ideally, the candidate has experience with hardware acceleration, PCIe implementation, as well as DMA protocols on FPGA. 

Locations: Menlo Park, California.

Responsibilities
  • Present and champion compelling solutions to both business and technical audiences.
  • Explore technology trends and their applicability to Pacific Biosciences next-generation products.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Systems Engineering, Optical, Mechanical, and System Integration teams to refine embedded and server FPGA requirements.
  • Work with stakeholders across the company to understand product needs and implement customer-focused solutions that meet business goals for quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Transition deliverables to mass production in collaboration with manufacturing NPI.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing on product-sustaining activities.
  • Improve existing designs to be more reliable, manufacturable, and serviceable.


Requirements
  • Bachelor's and/or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related discipline with 10+ years of work experience.
  • Possess an analytical mindset and extensive experience with electronics and FPGA design.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and structured problem-solving approach.
  • Demonstrated competency in electronics and computer architecture and transitioning products to manufacturing.
  • In-depth knowledge of FPGA architecture, design, verification, and debug (Xilinx, Intel).
  • Proficiency with Verilog (preferably SystemVerilog) for both synthesis and verification.
  • Proficient in Python / TCL / Shell scripting languages running in Linux environment.
  • Familiarity with system-level estimates and implications of power, thermal, and real estate.
  • Familiarity with high-level synthesis tools.
  • Working knowledge of C++.
  • Experience with FPGA gigabit transceivers.
  • Experience with 10G/100G ethernet, DDR3/DD4, DSP implementations on FPGAs is desirable.
  • Experience with SoC including (e.g., Zynq with ARM cores) and soft processors (e.g. MicroBlaze) is desirable.
  • Experience with imaging sensor interface is desirable.
  • Familiarity with High-Performance Compute (HPC) architectures is desirable.
  • Familiarity with gtest, cmake, make, git is desirable.
  • Familiarity with OpenHT is desirable.
  • Ability to debug "full-stack" from hardware to FPGA to firmware to software is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, a strong team player, able to take initiative, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively as part of a strong hardware team. Thrives in a fast-paced environment, interacting with scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines.
