About the role

Sana Biotechnology is looking to expand our team with enthusiastic individuals to forward our novel targeted gene therapy platform. You will be leading a small team in a vibrant research environment with cross-functional connections to technical operations and gene therapy groups. You would work to advance the creative vision around our gene therapy platform with an emphasis on making gene therapies accessible to all patients who need them. This role reports to the Associate Director, Protein Engineering.

What you'll do

Develop Sana gene therapy platform and build analytical understanding of its mechanisms of action.
  • Hire and oversee a small team (2+ research associates) to coordinate key viral vector productions and associated analytics to support our gene therapy platform.
  • Lead hypothesis-driven investigations into mammalian cell biological mechanisms that regulate potency and targeting of our gene therapy vectors, with an emphasis on cross-functional collaboration.
  • Lead diverse assay development for characterizing novel vectors that support our platform.
  • Interface with our Technical Operations team and share vector production and analytics learnings.
  • Work with our Technology Sciences team to facilitate tracking and mining of large datasets.
  • Provide mentorship to others by leading in presentations and scientific discussion as well as living the Sana values.
  • Understand and apply relevant scientific literature to the design of experimental protocols. This may include literature from outside of the Scientist's primary field of research.

What we're looking for

PhD in scientific discipline with at least 5+ years with laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting or a Masters' degree in a scientific specialty with a minimum of 8+ years of experience and proven proficiency in both independent research and leading small teams that support critical scientific functions within an academic or industry-based organization.
  • Experienced with interpersonal skills and an ability to adapt communication style to interact effectively with a range of collaborators including research associates, technical experts, computational biologists, protein engineers, and therapeutic teams.
  • Advanced experience in viral vector productions, including understanding of vector production variables and important analytics.
  • A strong self-starter, independent thinker, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Well versed in a wide array of laboratory techniques, with emphasis on mammalian cell biological methods, and experienced in their use. Strong publication record from graduate and post doctoral work is expected.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail and data quality, and experience working on diverse collaborative teams.
