ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer Global Tax serves a central role in the success of our business.  We mitigate risk and create value, enabling our business to achieve our critical mission of creating breakthroughs that change patients’ lives.  As part of Pfizer Global Tax, the International Tax planning and U.S. Tax planning teams are responsible for tax planning in all of Pfizer’s markets and play a lead role in coordinating with the functional pillars of Pfizer Global Tax that bring different areas of substantive expertise such as tax reporting, compliance, indirect tax and transfer pricing.  The tax planning team identifies, develops, implements, and manages tax strategies to help minimize Pfizer’s overall tax cost and enhance value to internal customers and external stakeholders.  We advise on the U.S. and international tax aspects of Pfizer’s business, manage tax audits for the international and U.S. markets, partner with transfer pricing team to design and implement transfer pricing strategies and mitigate transfer pricing risks, assist tax reporting team on financial reporting related disclosures and calculations, assist tax compliance team on complex tax technical matters, and coordinate with indirect tax team on VAT and other indirect tax planning.

As a member of the Pfizer Global tax planning team, this role will assist the VP International Tax, VP U.S. Tax and other members of the planning team in various aspects of the responsibilities described above.  The candidate will need to have a basic understanding of U.S. tax law, with a focus on the U.S. international tax rules such as GILTI, FDII, BEAT, Subpart F, and foreign tax credits.  The role will also need to develop knowledge and expertise in the tax law of assigned countries as well as the interrelationship of the tax law in different jurisdictions.  Under the guidance of VP International Tax and VP U.S. Tax, this role’s specific tax responsibilities will include design and implementation of tax planning strategies, including with respect to acquisition structures, integration and dispositions, as well as ongoing planning and tax analysis for day-to-day business operations.  In addition, the role will have tax audit responsibilities in his/her assigned countries.  This position will need to perform independent research covering U.S. and non-U.S. tax issues.  This role will coordinate and interface extensively with tax professionals across different pillars within Global Tax, as well as functions outside of Global Tax, including Treasury, Controller, Finance, Legal, supply chains, etc.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the VP International Tax and VP U.S. Tax and other members of the Global Tax team in analyzing business activities, M&A transactions, financing and commercial transactions and make recommendations to the company on tax-efficient structures
  • Develop deep knowledge of existing and proposed U.S. tax rules, legislation, rulings, regulations and litigation as well as relevant foreign tax law
  • Closely monitor and advise on changes in tax law both in the U.S. and in assigned foreign countries that may affect the company’s tax positions
  • Lead legal research on identified tax issues; accountable for performing legal analysis and delivering legal conclusion based on research
  • Draft and deliver memoranda and business presentations
  • Partner with the Global Tax M&A and Business Development teams in structuring acquisitions and divestitures to minimize local and U.S. tax costs as well as transaction and transfer tax costs; in this capacity, draft contracts and negotiate with counterparties
  • Partner Transfer Pricing team to monitor and counsel management on global transfer pricing policies and issues, perform research in transfer pricing related issues, and implement transfer pricing related strategies
  • Manage and oversee tax audits for the assigned markets; timely and effectively bring relevant local markets’ tax audits to successful resolutions
  • Partner with local market colleagues and outside advisors in assigned countries to mitigate tax risks and timely resolve tax issues 
  • Partner and interface extensively with tax professionals across different functions within Global Tax, such as compliance, reporting, global audit, global M&A, transfer pricing, indirect tax, as well as professionals outside Global Tax (e.g., Treasury, Controller, Finance, Legal, supply chains)
  • Build effective relationships and interface on a regular basis with internal stakeholders and external tax advisors and stakeholders as required, including with tax, legal, finance in support of complex projects

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • A JD degree is required; a Tax LLM or CPA is a plus
  • 7 + of relevant experience with a major, publicly-held corporation, a major law firm or a big 4 public accounting firm; depending on the type of experience, candidates with 4 + years of experience with a major law firm will also be considered 
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of tax planning on a multinational level
  • Excel skills
  • Strong attention to details
  • Basic knowledge of existing and proposed U.S. tax laws, particularly on the U.S. international tax rules
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Exceptional business communication skills with ability to effectively relate tax issues to non-tax personnel
  • Strong consensus builder and team player; strong skills at communicating with upper management on a range of broad business plans
  • Strong commercial and business awareness
  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong background in a broad range of international tax issues including inbound and outbound tax issues
  • Excellent project management skills, strong working knowledge of the organizational operations and the ability to work closely with groups outside of tax within the corporate structure
  • Finance experience with ability to work extensively with colleagues who are responsible for accounting, finance, capital expenditure, transfer pricing and treasurer functions
  • Strong ability to effectively manage outside counsel and to completing projects on time and on budget

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Work Schedule – Be willing and flexible to work in non-conventional work hours, including frequent meetings/conference calls with colleagues in the United States and in Europe
  • Travel – Up to 20% of time.
