ROLE SUMMARY

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Project Manager provides project management, planning and resource forecasting support to Pharmaceutical Science Small Molecule project teams. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your experience in pharmaceutical / technical development at the intersection of business and science.   Collectively our team manages the project plans for all Small Molecule development programs, representing a portfolio of ~75 projects with total forecasted annual costs of ~$500 million.  Through your work as a Project Manager, you will directly contribute to the successful delivery of this portfolio and expand your knowledge as you work across business categories and develop plans to reflect various development paradigms.   Your work will directly impact the budgets sets for projects, PharmSci, and the Business Categories.  

In this role, you will be responsible for the generation, management, and maintenance of high quality project plans to enable the operational/strategic delivery of new medicines to patients.  As a Project Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that your project plans, including timing of key PharmSci activities / scientific workflows and associated resource forecasts (both internal resources and direct expenses), are consistent with candidate milestones and overall development strategies.  You will leverage and further develop your analytical skills and learn how to present non-scientific data in a format that enables and support decisions related to project strategies and budgets.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Execution and Delivery

  • As a member of the PharmSci Project Team, the Project Manager will work with team members (e.g., PharmSci Team Leader (PSTL) / Co-Development Lead, Candidate / Asset Planner, PharmSci project team members, Supply Chain Lead) to manage assigned projects and achieve key milestones according to the endorsed timeline, cost, and technical development strategy.
  • Participates in Project Team meetings and supports the PSTL with overall management of the project team (as requested by and agreed with PSTL).  
  • Conducts quarterly forecast reviews with PSTL and Finance managers to support forecast updates and annual budget build processes.  
  • Monitors and tracks status of purchase orders to ensure alignment with Project Plan and Finance forecasts, including monthly accruals of costs.  
  • Contributes to risk management through the identification of scheduling conflicts with project milestones, PharmSci workflow inter-dependencies, and/ or budgetary risks to the project.   

Schedule and Resource Management

  • Responsible for constructing and maintaining the PharmSci project plans (utilizing Pfizer’s enterprise project management system, Planisware) to define the timing / schedule and resource requirements (FTEs and external costs) for the pharmaceutical development, supply chain, and co-development activities needed to execute the project (from pre-Candidate Selection through Registration and Launch).
  • Ensures appropriate alignment between the PharmSci functional plan and the Asset / Candidate Development Plan maintained by Global Product Development (GPD).  This includes proactive monitoring of candidate milestone changes and requires strong partnership and communications with GPD Asset Planners.  
  • Produces “what-if” scenario analyses and cost-estimates to reflect alternative development timelines (e.g., acceleration strategies), competing technical development strategies, and/or business development deals.  Scenario analyses are used to support decisions by PSSM and Business Categories and impact project delivery, costs, and resource requirements.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Conducts necessary analytics and reporting to support regular reviews of project level forecasts with PSTLs, PharmSci Line Resource Estimators, and Finance to ensure high-data quality and completeness of forecast data needed for PharmSci resource reviews, budget and Operating Plan processes.  
  • Utilizes data analytics and reporting tools including Business Objects, Microsoft Excel (including Pivot Tables), OnePager, and Spotfire to quantify and explain project level forecasts, changes over time, deltas between scenarios, and inform decisions by PSTL, Finance, manager, and/or Category Leaders.

Process Improvement

  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of project planning templates and methods and/or reporting and analytics practices within the Portfolio Operations and Project Management Team.
  • Participates and contributes to assigned Resource Planning (RAPID) governance teams, committees, or Limited Duration Teams to represent PharmSci perspective and needs within the broader WRDM and GPD planning community.  

Team Development

  • Leverages scientific and technical education and experience to support the development and understanding of pharmaceutical / CMC development principles within the Portfolio Operations and Project Management Team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires B.S. with 8+ years of experience or M.S. degree with 6+ years of experience or PhD degree with 3+ years of experience in scientific or engineering discipline (chemistry, formulation science, pharmacy, related engineering disciplines, etc.). Must have genuine interest in non-lab based role.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience managing project plans, teams, or initiatives is expected. 
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in verbal and written communications.
  • Able to work under tight timelines, multi-task, and prioritize one’s work to meet key deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and develop strong working relationships within a matrix organization and team based environment.
  • Strong analytical thinking and data analysis skills required (including fluency in Microsoft Excel)
  • Strong attention to detail required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefer candidates with direct work experience in Pharmaceutical / CMC development within a large pharmaceutical company, small biotech, contract development / contract research organization
  • Understanding of key disciplines involved in Pharmaceutical development, including API, drug product, analytical development, manufacturing, clinical supply chain, and regulatory filing activities.
  • Advanced data analytics skills including advanced Excel skills, relevant coding experience, and experience with data visualization tools and software
  • Ability to convert datasets into charts, graphs, and PowerPoint slides, with explanation / insights clearly articulated
  • Formal Project Management Certification (PMP or otherwise)
  • Experience with Enterprise Project Management tools and systems (e.g., Planisware or otherwise)

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • May require occasional business travel to other Pfizer sites and locations, including occasional travel to the US and to PGS manufacturing sites to participate in Co Development team meetings.
