The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Team is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining programs and policies that comply with all local, state, and federal EHS rules and regulations. EHS promotes a positive safety culture that has an emphasis on best in class customer service, meaningful site education and training, and company-wide equity and inclusion. EHS ensures that all personnel have a safe and environmentally friendly work environment through the successful integration of EHS programs, policies, and services. This role reports to the Head of Laboratory Operations.


You will serve as the local lead of EH&S in Cambridge. You will be a member of the Cambridge LFO team, local and cross-site safety committees, and main safety point of contact for lab stewards. Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct assessments, audits, and inspections, identifying areas of risk or non-compliance and recommend solutions to the appropriate decision-maker
  • Execute on assigned follow-ups and corrective actions in a timely manner
  • Assist with maintaining records and complete necessary documentation
  • Participate in the development and delivery of EHS trainings, identifying opportunities for improvement as Sana's needs evolve
  • Respond to safety communications (e.g. Safety Reports) by gathering information and escalating details upwards to the appropriate decision-maker
  • Coordinate with relevant vendors and contractors to ensure execution of work (e.g. overseeing hazardous waste pickups) and accurate delivery of service(s)
  • Conduct evaluations or reviews for various projects (e.g. onboarding of new equipment, ergonomics, etc.) and escalate roadblocks and/or concerns to appropriate decision-maker

Basic Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of demonstrated EH&S experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical research or development environment
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and reinforcing EHS programs, policies and processes.
  • Knowledge and broad technical background with local and federal EHS regulations.
  • A background or experience in a laboratory setting and safe laboratory practices
  • Knowledge of biological safety levels and associated controls
  • Knowledge of chemical and hazardous waste management
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to develop relationships quickly and effectively at all levels throughout the company.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions, educate others and implement corrective actions in meaningful, pragmatic ways
  • Proven collaborative and teamwork skills and experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be a creative and proactive problem solver; keen ability to anticipate needs in a lab environment, solving problems with sound judgment
  • Experience managing and prioritizing inputs from diverse stakeholders to deploy a plan that meets the needs of the business
  • Ability to work independently under remote supervision
  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person, subject to certain exceptions, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with establishing an active caring safety culture
  • Experience with Chemical Inventory Management Systems (such as Chem Inventory, Jagger, Chemical Safety, MSDSOnline, or others)
  • Experience with GMP laboratories
  • Experience with office and laboratory ergonomics
  • Experience teaching or conducting trainings

  • This position requires 24-hour response availability for emergency situations

  • Significant standing, walking, moving, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to move and lift boxes and equipment up to 45 lbs
