The Business Process Excellence (BPE) function works across all business units and functions globally and is the Center of Excellence for Enterprise scale process, or “mega-process,” redesign and establishment of Agile ways of working in the enterprise. The BPE team enables and supports how Pfizer will achieve our Purpose of Breakthroughs that Change Patients’ Lives. Using facilitated, cross-functional Kaizen events, we re-imagine simplified, efficient and digitized processes, organizational structures and solutions.  In addition, we enable sustained effectiveness at a team and team-of-teams through the application of scrum, Kanban and other Agile frameworks. As the enterprise COE for Agile, we enable teams to accomplish their work in a faster, more innovative and customer-centric way. 



The Director, Agile Coaching & Kaizen Facilitation role is accountable for ensuring teams obtain the maximum business value using Agile through effective application of lean mindsets and framework. Fostering a community of Agile expertise, and facilitating Kaizen process redesign events, this role provides value to our internal and external stakeholders and supports teams in creating breakthroughs for Patients. This colleague will establish best practices to ensure the team lives agile values and principles and understands the processes and practices that allow teams to enjoy the benefits of living in Agile ways, measuring their progress and continuously improving. 


Working with across talented teams of functional and technical experts, the candidate embodies Agile practices and values, helping to drive the program of digital transformation that empowers Pfizer’s customer-oriented vision. 


This director-level position requires an individual with a proven ability to lead/coach teams, globally, across a variety of disciplines, outside of IT, delivering results that meet and exceed stakeholder expectations. This is an individual contributor role.


Role Responsibilities  

This role will help lead our organization in adopting new ways of working by facilitating Kaizen events to bring cross-functional teams together to understand, document and simplify Enterprise ‘mega-processes.’ Once new processes are defined, aid in the establishment of necessary business cases and planning required to implement changes through creation of Agile teams. 


To do this, the incumbent will be responsible for the following: 

  • Fosters maturation of agile mindset by asking powerful questions focusing on scaled program planning, scrum-of-scrums, identification of cross-program dependencies, scaled release planning, empirical data for decision models, and ultimate delivery of work efforts. 

  • Objectively informs/assists leaders in a non-biased manner to consider highly complex and long-term implications of transformation to self-governing teams; uses a system view in facilitating impediment removal at the team/program/value stream level. 

  • Ability to work and influence successfully within a matrix environment and build effective business partnerships with all levels of team members 

  • Demonstrated experience educating various roles and levels of people on Agile principles, provide training sessions and teach skills that lead towards organization-wide adoption of Agile framework 

  • Educate and train colleagues, stakeholders and senior leaders across the entire enterprise, on Kaizen/Agile principles, providing them with tools to help reduce waste and drive improvement and accountable for training teams and establishing continuous improvement mindsets that allow for the organization-wide Agile adoption. 

  • Plan and implement scaled agile teams and facilitate complex design of scaled teams using SAFe ensuring team vision, goals, scope, KPIs, and product domain are established, agreed and understood to facilitate sustainability and continuous improvement.  

  • Leads the design as appropriate of organizational changes and act as a change agent working collaboratively with business and functional leaders to motivate and drive change and facilitate communities (guilds and chapters) using Kaizen and Agile principles to ensure sustained adoption  

  • Establish an effective and measurable ‘business value driver’ tree for all teams, linking teams’ expected outcomes and vision to discreet KPIs allowing every team member to see the direct linkage of work to outcome.   

  • Train and coach enterprise level senior leaders on new or enhanced behaviors needed to sustainably lead and enable Agile teams. Acts as advocate for Kaizen and Agile ways of working, influencing stakeholders and leveraging constructive relationships across the company to achieve the needs of the business units involved.    

  • Act an agent of change for organizations using Kaizen and Agile within Pfizer, facilitating communities (guilds and chapters) of Agile practitioners to become self-sustaining, thriving and collaborative    


Basic Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline, master’s degree preferred. 

  • 10+ years of relevant experience as a process improvement expert and/or leading global organizations in transforming to adopt Agile ways of thinking and working. 

  • Is a subject matter expert in the application of Agile framework and Kaizen events to redefine business processes. 

  • Proven expertise in delivering business value gained from experience working as an Agile coach, Lean Coach or Scrum Master, using design thinking and lean principles, promoting innovation and taking appropriate risks to challenge the status quo. 

  • Anticipates internal and external business and regulatory / compliance issues that will impact the highly complex problems being solved.   

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to speak in public and present in front of stakeholders at all levels. 

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and facilitating discussions to explore the best possible solutions influencing mindset and behaviors, including senior leaders 

  • Proven experience in coaching teams and programs through the adoption of Lean-Kanban practices and principles 

  • The ability to lead and inspire with imagination, courage, and curiosity in a complex, matrix environment with virtual teams and indirect resources geographically distributed. 

  • The ideal candidate will have one or more coaching level certifications from industry-recognized scrum, scaled agile, Kanban and Kaizen certification bodies, Scrum Alliance, Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC), SAFe Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), etc.). (for example, Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) and/or Certified SAFe® Program Consultant).   


Preferred Qualifications  

  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and concepts in business processes across biopharmaceutical companies 

  • Ideally, has a proven track record of using knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, related industries, customer requirements and the general business environment to support teams in their revising processes and/or adopting Agile 

  • Experience in using and/or teaching use of Jira, Confluence and Jira Align a plus. 



  • Travel will be required as part of this role. Expectations around travel will vary but candidates must be capable of travel within the region, to other regions, and to Pfizer World Headquarters.  

  • BPE is a 7x24x365 endeavor. This role may require physical or virtual participation on a weekend, holiday, or after normal business hours
