Automation Scientist/Engineer, Sample Prep Biochemistry

Pacific Biosciences seeks a highly skilled and creative Automation Scientist or Engineer to drive implementation of automation solutions across our core front-end sample preparation products for the Pacific Biosciences SMRTTM (single molecule, real-time) sequencing platforms. The primary objectives of the team are to develop highly scalable, user-friendly, products and protocols that increase system throughput. The successful candidate will develop and implement automation workflows to support library preparation across different application areas. A strong working knowledge of genomic DNA extraction, industry-standard sample prep practices (NGS), and sequencing applications is essential. The successful candidate will be working in a fast-paced and energetic environment, interacting with scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds.

Key responsibilities:
  • Innovation to improve Pacific Biosciences SMRTTM sequencing sample preparation methods and products
  • Work directly with scientists to understand protocols and translate those requirements into specifications for automation solutions
  • Develop high throughput automation protocols with goal of turnaround time optimization and minimization of human intervention points
  • Train users, troubleshoot, optimize workflow and provide ongoing support for end users
  • Analysis, interpretation and troubleshooting experimental results


Requirements:
  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Bioengineering, Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with operating and programming liquid handling robotics platforms, preferably Hamilton STAR liquid handlers
  • Experience in development of automated next-generation sequencing protocols and/or standard molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation and purification, DNA quantitation, PCR, etc.)
  • Strong quantitative, troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Good communication and collaborative skills
  • Enjoy working closely with others as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Prior experience in the biotechnology industry highly desirable
  • Familiarity with Product Development process desirable
