Join our Microbe Strain Engineering team as an Associate Scientist or Scientist I
As a member of the Microbe Strain Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to work with talented colleagues to develop insights into a diverse collection of microbes, as the team researches and develops microbial solutions for customers across many industries.  You will work within cross-disciplinary teams with expertise in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbial physiology, fermentation, bioinformatics, automation and microbial omics.

In Microbe Research we discover and develop the next microbial solutions for a better world. You will be part of a team of more than 20 passionate Zymers working to unlock the potential of bacteria, yeast and fungi. We work together with local colleagues focusing on automation, genomics, assays and fermentation, as well as R&D colleagues across all of Novozymes, including application areas, such as animal and human health, bioenergy and sustainable agriculture.  We enjoy a collaborative working environment with a shared vision for pursuing goals that matter, working smart and enjoying the scientific journey.  
 
In this role you’ll make an impact by:

 

  • Identifying opportunities for developing microbial products with improved performance and increased customer value.
  • Developing and applying tools of strain design and engineering to a diverse collection of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and fungi.
  • Uncovering connections between genotypes and key phenotypes, to open the door to developing more effective microbial solutions
  • Identifying, evolving and/or engineering new strain variants, with performance advantages needed to realize the full potential of microbial biosolutions
  • Working well in teams to unlock applications and biological insights you'd never achieve on your own


You preferably have:

  • An innovative mind-set and can-do attitude coupled with an enthusiasm for using applied microbiology to bring biosolutions to the world.
  • An educational background in Microbiology, Food Science, Biochemical Engineering, Computational Biology or a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in combining genomic, bioinformatic, metabolic pathway and mechanistic understandings with computational methodologies to develop strain improvement strategies.
  • Contributed to strain improvement programs focused on protein expression, metabolic engineering or other applied objectives.
  • Experience developing and optimizing synthetic biology tools for microbial strain engineering or screening, including  areas such as genome engineering, biosensors, HT transformation, cell-free systems and single-cell technologies.
  • Familiarity with Benchling, Riffyn or similar systems for managing strain design-build-test pipelines.
  • Excellent computational and computer skills, including some experience with statistical software such as JMP or R and/or experience with Python, SQL or other computational environments.
  • A strong desire to work as a member of an empowered, cross-disciplinary problem-solving team
  • A mindset that embraces challenging science, recognizes change as opportunity and finds satisfaction in team success


Additional Information:
The specific job level offered will depend on qualifications. As guidance, the Associate Scientist positions requires a MS with min. 4 yrs of experience or a BS degree with min. 7 yrs experience.  Positions at the Scientist level require a PhD with postdoctoral experience or the qualification of for the Associate Scientist position with additional years of relevant experience.
This job will be located at our microbe innovation hub in Davis, CA.
