We are seeking to hire a highly capable and seasoned research leader to head UNITY’s In Vivo Pharmacology group. This position is an exciting opportunity to join a highly collaborative team focused on exploring novel biology and developing transformative medicines. This role will be a critical part of the Biology Leadership Team and will be responsible for overseeing the In Vivo strategy, including the selection/development/validation of in vivo models that focus on understanding the pharmacodynamic activity of therapeutic candidates and the translation to disease-relevant efficacy. The successful candidate will be highly motivated to help move UNITY’s innovative science forward and have a proven track record in drug discovery, ranging from target validation, lead optimization, translational pharmacology, to IND submission. The duties of the job include maintaining a cohesive team, guiding optimal experimental design and execution, ensuring rigorous analysis and interpretation of data, regular presentations (verbal/written) of results and interpretations in Discovery meetings and in company strategic governance meetings. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Oversight of UNITY’s In Vivo Pharmacology department (senior scientist to RA level) 
  • Contribute to the company’s research strategy as a member of the Biology Leadership Team; help to identify competitive advantages for UNITY’s approaches 
  • Assume accountability for delivering high quality data to support UNITY’s projects in ophthalmology, neurology and potentially other disease areas 
  • Effectively motivate, mentor and develop research staff 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in Cellular Molecular Pharmacology, IHC, Toxicology and Technical Operations to efficiently move drug discovery projects to the clinic 
  • Identify gaps, efficiencies and new technologies to improve group work flows 
  • Management of budget and resources to conduct internal and CRO-based studies to drive projects forward 
  • Utilize experience in generating PK/PD relationships, exploring pathway biomarkers and establishing disease models relevant to human biology to further UNITY’s innovative scientific approaches 
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ph.D. with >10 years of post-graduate work (at least 6 years industry experience). Degree in Pharmacology, Physiology, Cancer Biology, Developmental Biology or a related field is essential 
  • Aptitude to think strategically about projects, external competition and internal resourcing 
  • Ownership of departmental data and representation of group in company meetings 
  • In-depth expertise pertaining to the validation and execution of in vivo disease models 
  • Ability to efficiently move projects forward while maintaining a high degree of scientific rigor 
  • Utilization of sound pharmacological principles to drive decision making, including utilizing target engagement assays in tissues, biomarkers and PK/PD relationships 
  • Evidence of independent scientific ability and a track record of scientific accomplishments through publications, patents, and invited presentations 
  • Capacity to identify gaps and implement new processes to enhance drug discovery workflows 
  • Experience with quantitative PCR and protein-based methods in tissue samples as well as immunohistochemistry 
  • Ability to manage complexity and ambiguity in a highly matrixed work environment 
  • Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills 
  • Track record of managing, developing, and mentoring scientists and research associates 
  • Creativity and the ability to lead and/or work within an interdisciplinary team in order to achieve technical and corporate milestones 
  • Robust experimental design and troubleshooting skills, and excellent data analysis/mining/statistics capabilities 
  • Prior experience authoring reports to support IND regulatory filings is preferred
