As a leader within the Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS) team, this Director of GSS, G&A Category Vertical will be responsible for over $800M of spend and directly manage a distributed team of three Global Category Managers!! In this capacity, this leader will be responsible for driving the development and implementation of robust category strategies which will deliver improvements in quality, savings, and continuity of supply. This leader will partner with stakeholder organizations within Amgen to manage supplier contracting, negotiations and performance. This leader will also be responsible for performance management and the ongoing development the team.

Primary Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of GSS for Indirect categories and GSS functional Excellence, this leader will perform the following:

  • Lead engagement with business partners to influence business strategy demonstrating supply market insights and align sourcing strategies
  • Champion a three-year pipeline of savings and value plans in alignment with category and business strategies to deliver balanced efficiency
  • Collaborate with Business Partners to deliver efficiency, supplier diversity, quality and any enablement required to achieve the business goals through supplier sourcing and partnering.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in sourcing processes, tools and operating model
  • Develop team capabilities and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion
  • Develop and manage strategy for G&A spend areas.
  • Be a trusted advisor to VPs / EDs of HR, Legal, Commercial Teams, Finance and Global Business Solutions
  • Influence and develop broad global programs and initiatives for key business partners
  • Be a sourcing professional with strong financial acumen
  • Serve as a thought partner and actively challenge work to deploy the most comprehensive and creative solutions; remove barriers for team to ensure its ability to execute
  • GSS decision maker for category/functional sourcing strategy and supplier selection
  • Champion supplier relationship management for critical suppliers within the scope of this vertical team.
  • Drive operating efficiencies by understanding business needs and sophisticated supply markets
  • Access supplier capability and innovation for the business
  • Identify and mitigate supply risk
  • Strong coach and talent manager and help develop direct reports
  • Managerial courage to provide performance feedback
  • Develop goals and prioritize team's work among multiple initiatives
  • Frame & drive cross-functional sourcing agenda
  • Drive alignment between category strategy and the needs and requirements of regions, countries, and sites
  • Deliver customer solutions via global / regional category strategy
  • Bring Industry/business function-specific knowledge and experience
  • Customize sourcing strategy to drive value in specific functional environment, including legal & regulatory context
  • Initiate/build industry peer relationships
  • Provide support, mentorship and guidance to shape the category strategies of direct reports
Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 4 years of directly related experience

OR

Masters degree and 8 years of directly related years

OR

Bachelors degree and 10 years of directly related experience

AND

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications
  • Diverse Global Sourcing/Procurement experience within and/or external to the Pharma industry
  • Experience in managing Indirect G&A categories such as Travel, Meetings, Managerial Consulting, Legal and HR services
  • Broad knowledge of the market forces shaping a customers business context (e.g. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and utilizing full set of sourcing levers to drive value for customers
  • Ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations
  • Ability to provide thought leadership and actively shape strategy within and external to GSS
Team Management & Change Management
  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
  • Ability to lead teams in a matrix organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines
  • Ability to lead, coach, and mentor direct reports
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving
  • Change management experience with large and complex organizational transformations
  • Demonstrated success in partnering cross-functionally
  • Ability to own and strengthen relationships with key customers and to champion change
  • Compelling and persuasive communicator (oral and written) with excellent interpersonal skills
Analytical & Technical
  • Knowledge of Category Strategy Development, Sourcing, contract negotiations, and supplier relationship management
  • Strong understanding of best practices in Global Sourcing and Procurement
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present insights based on the needs of the audience
  • Ability to develop business cases and champion opportunities with quantifiable financial benefits
