The Head of Histology - Senior Principal Scientist, leads the experimental design and execution, analysis and interpretation of data, regular presentations of results and interpretation at project team and department meetings. This role oversees activities of the associates, aligning work with Program Team Leads, and managing and prioritizing work.

Responsibilities
  • Builds efficiency and new capabilities in all aspects of histology to contribute to the discovery of novel gene therapies.
  • Directly supervise all Histology Team members.
  • Manages histology projects and priorities across Histology Team members.
  • Manages companywide project requests and provide cross-functional communication for histology-related projects to Project Team Leaders and Lead Scientists.
  • Works in collaboration with Pathologists to deliver material to access safety in preclinical studies
  • Develops and implements new assays, functionality, and technology to address project needs.
  • Oversees sample/data organization logistics and assay/data quality control.
  • Works hands-on in the lab to contribute to project execution: process tissue for histology and imaging.
  • Generates data using fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, and whole slide scanners.
  • Writes formal study reports for submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Serves as technical resource, training and supervising other scientists in histology and equipment usage.
  • Manages equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Other relates duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Biology or related scientific area with 12 years' experience or Master's with 10 or PHD with 8 years' experience.
  • 6 years' experience as a histologist.
  • highly innovative and creative with relevant industry experience including basic histology, various staining and histochemical approaches, imaging, morphometry, quantitative analysis, experience with automated histology equipment, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in histology and complex tissue analysis.
  • Experience with histological examination of neuronal tissues, whole brain slices, and brain substructure evaluation preferred.
  • Experience with floating and mounted rodent sections required. Large animal experience is preferred.
  • Light and confocal microscopy experience.
  • Proficiency with histological image analysis and statistical analysis, experience with image quantification tools.


The level of this position will be based on the final candidate's qualifications.
