We are looking for a passionate and driven scientist to join the Genomic Applications group. The scientist will be involved in the development and characterization of assays and applications for Element Biosciences’ NGS technologies, specifically in areas of sample extraction, library prep, and DNA amplifications. Ideal candidates will have hands-on lab experience in NGS library preparation and related genomic assays. This position requires technical expertise and drive to work independently as well as in collaboration with other team members. Must have good organizational skills, display a can-do attitude, and have demonstrated success working in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities and rapidly changing priorities. Expect to be part of a highly energetic and collaborative team.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
·       Design and execute experiment to develop and optimize NGS sample prep and library workflow in support of product commercialization
·       Lead assay performance evaluation and investigation with limited instruction. Deliver concise, accurate and truthful analysis and report. Present research summaries, make recommendations, and develop research plans in technical meetings.
·       Drive new concept technology and applications by providing feasibility and down selection based on technical expertise in NGS applications
·       Collaborate with internal and external groups to test and enable new assays on company’s platforms 
·       Develop, test, and write SOPs. Author work instructions, application notes, and other technical documents
·       Other duties as assigned


REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
·       Expertise in DNA modification and amplification methods. Deep knowledge in properties and biochemistry assay of polymerases and other DNA interacting enzymes.
·       Experience in nucleic acid sample preparation and characterization methods.
·       Knowledge in fluorescence assays, labeling, bioconjugation, surface chemistry, microfluidics, biosensors
·       Prior experience in fluorescence microscopy and high-throughput imaging system is a plus
·       Comfortable working with complex device prototypes
·       Prior experience with workflow automation is a plus
·       Familiarity with NGS data analysis is desired 
·       Work and time management skills. Capability to plan, prioritize, and navigate several studies at a time. Strong organization skills to manage activities and track progress
·       Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and engagement to explore new areas.
·       Excellent problem-solving skills. Attention to details. Able to lead root-cause identification of assay performance, and implement mitigations.


PREFEERED SKILLS:
·       Experience with reagent/buffer formulation and assay development.
·       Data and statistical analysis of large complex data sets using JMP, R, Matlab or similar. Utilizes DOE where appropriate.
·       Good organization skills detailed orientated mindset, plus exceptional collaboration and communication skills.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
·       Doctoral (Ph.D.) in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering or a related discipline, with 0-3 years of industry experience and/or 6+ years laboratory research experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
·       Experience in nucleic acid analysis methodologies, including, but not limited to PCR, qPCR, next-generation sequencing.
·       Demonstrated track record of technical achievement.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
·       Must be able to lift 15 pounds
