SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Vice President of Computational Research will lead a team to develop algorithms, models, data platforms, and analysis methods for existing and novel applications of Pacific Bioscience's technologies. This successful candidate will recruit, mentor, and empower world-class talent in data science and bioinformatics. The VP of Computational Research will collaborate with the cross-disciplinary members of the research team as well as the enterprise software development and product teams to define and deliver on our product roadmap. This person will have the ability to envision and create innovative computational methods to advance our medium- and long-term business priorities. The VP of Computational Research will bring deep experience in applying computer science to solve critical business challenges, and will develop and sustain a culture of passion, hard work, and innovation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Vice President of Computational Research will lead the computer science research efforts for the company. The VP of Computational Research will lead a team of computer scientists, data scientists, and bioinformatics experts to improve accuracy and performance of our algorithms and computational methods. In addition, the VP of Computational Research will lead the team responsible for data analysis pipelines for novel applications of Pacific Biosciences long-read sequencing data. With a deep understanding of the product life cycle, the VP of Computational Research will work cross-functionally with other members of the research team (that includes biologists, chemists, and engineers) to research and innovate high-impact algorithms and prototype software applications to the enterprise software development team. A key focus of this role is to provide strong technical leadership as well as the ability to understand how to use those skills to maximize business impact.

  • Be a key leader of our multi-disciplinary Research and Technology Development team.
  • Create a vibrant research road map, ensure attainment of key milestones and checkpoints, and adhere to product specifications, timelines, and budgets.
  • Provide strong mentorship, strategic leadership, and technical expertise in bioinformatics, data science, and/or computational biology.
  • Formulate and implement a long-term strategy to exploit computational innovation to advance company objectives.
  • Influence the development of R&D strategies to enable rapid progression of improvements to products and data analysis services.
  • Ensure proper documentation of code, workflows, reports, and analyses of computational research team.
  • Provide regular updates on complex research activities to colleagues at all levels and across disciplines.
  • Lead the application of Machine Learning/Deep Learning approaches to improve product accuracy and performance.
  • Identifying institutions/companies that are good candidates for collaboration
  • Collaborating with other informatics scientists, academic experts, and statisticians around data analysis methods and solutions for automated workflows and database creation.
  • Implementing, executing, and documenting bioinformatics pipelines and workflows
  • Publishing scientific papers and posters and presenting the platform and its findings effectively in conferences/meetings


Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in applied Computer Science research.
  • 5+ years of experience managing a team of computational scientists.
  • Strong grounding in biology or medicine with strong statistical and quantitative data analysis skills and experience.
  • Experience in developing bioinformatics workflows for NGS-based data and assays.
  • Experience in building and scaling research teams, with the proven ability to attract, inspire, motivate, and retain top-tier talent.
  • Proven ability to establish, articulate and implement a concrete research plan that clearly aligns with corporate and commercial goals.
  • Experience with matrixed teams and external business partners.
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical, and presentation communication skills.
  • Inspirational leader who motivates others and acts with a sense of urgency.
