SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Vice President of Engineering Research will be responsible for finding innovative electrical and mechanical engineering solutions that will be a foundation of the company's technological future. This person will recruit world-class talent, manage the appropriate research methodologies, and create the proper organizational structure to drive a high-performing research team that collaborates with the cross-disciplinary members of the research team as well as the development, manufacturing, and product teams to define and deliver on our product roadmap. This person will have the ability to bridge technology with business acumen, will bring experience in developing industry-leading products, and will develop and sustain a culture of passion, hard work, and innovation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Vice President of Engineering Research will lead the engineering research efforts for the company. The VP of Engineering Research will have responsibility for research into chip design, optics, sensors, and fluidics to bring to life the next generation of groundbreaking Pacific Bioscience genomics solutions. The VP Engineering Research will also be responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team of engineers who will develop highly innovative options for commercial application while meeting project timelines. With a strong understanding of the stages of our engineering, manufacturing, and product lifecycle, the VP of Engineering Research will work with the cross-disciplinary research team (including biologists, chemists, and computer scientists) to investigate and innovate high-impact solutions and prototypes for the instrumentation and chip development teams. A key focus of the role is to provide strong technical product leadership coupled with equally effective project management skills.

  • Create a vibrant research road map, ensure attainment of key milestones and checkpoints, and adhere to product specifications, timelines and budgets.
  • Participate in the development of a strong product pipeline and a portfolio of marketed products that are differentiated and provide competitive advantage for the company.
  • Formulate and implement the long-term strategy with respect to new and emerging engineering technologies that advance company objectives.
  • Attract, develop, and retain top talent for the Engineering Research team, while motivating staff to continually improve its performance.
  • Collaborate with Intellectual Property (IP) to ensure Freedom to Operate, working with lawyers, engineers, and scientists, as required, to write and submit patentable inventions.
  • Ensure that the Engineering Research organization provides technical assistance to other departments.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical, or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in using progressive research and/or product development leadership roles.
  • Experience in building and scaling research teams, with the proven ability to attract, inspire, motivate, and retain top-tier talent.
  • Proven ability to establish, articulate and implement a concrete research plan that clearly aligns with corporate and commercial goals.
  • Professional experience in ideation and incubation which has led to shipping products
  • Experience with matrixed teams and external business partners.
  • Experience building sequencing or other genomics technologies is not required, but is considered a plus.
