Position Overview:

Molecular Templates is seeking a highly skilled and highly motivated professional to support accounting functions. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for day-to-day operations and preparation of reports and statistics detailing financial results. This includes reviewing and making journal entries, reviewing, and reconciling general ledger accounts, documenting records of assets and oversight of payroll operations. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for the revenue recognition process. This includes creating and updating revenue models and supporting documents, collaborating with internal and external business partners, and recording adjustments. The Accounting Manager will be responsible for the administration of the Company's employee stock option plans: coordinate enrollment and distribution of stock; maintain and update participant records, forms; document and process related to stock and options. Develop and maintain communication systems regarding option plan processes, answer employee questions, and resolve issues regarding stock options. Collect and prepare data on capital stock, stock option activity, and other data for internal and external reporting.

This position requires accounting skills and knowledge, analytical and mathematical skills, organizational and time-management skills, verbal, and written communication skills, plus ability to apply attention to detail and manage competing priorities. Establish and maintain accounting practices to ensure accurate and reliable data necessary for business operations. Act as a liaison between the company, government and auditors providing the required information and ensuring that proper information is maintained for historical purposes. Select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day management of accounting functions, including developing and administering policies, business processes and quality standards
  • Maintain a system of internal control policies and procedures to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC and applicable assurance that reporting systems accurately capture all financial data for financial, tax, and other reporting
  • Ensure deliverables are on time, within budget and meet the quality levels expected by the Company's internal and external business partners
  • Direct the maintenance of general and subsidiary ledgers, accounts receivable, revenue, depreciation, and operating expenses
  • Establish system controls for new financial systems and develop procedures to improve existing systems
  • Coordinate, perform and support preparation of materials and schedules for financial, payroll, grant, and any other audits and/or quarterly reviews and reporting
  • Research and implement new accounting standards issued by the FASB or other governing authority, if applicable
  • Manage, review, and perform month, quarter and year-end close procedures
  • Prepare and/or review general ledger entries, account reconciliations, financial statements and reporting
  • Oversight for payroll activities for timeliness, accuracy, and compliance
  • Perform, manage, and coordinate revenue recognition process, adjustments, and reconciliations
  • Perform and manage stock administration: maintain and update participant records; execute share releases; maintain accurate equity plan data; and follow payroll reporting procedures
  • Other duties and special projects, as assigned
  • Directly supervise one to two employees in the Accounting Group. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or related field, required
  • Minimum of five (5) years' relevant experience with all functions of accounting, required
  • Experience in public accounting and/or CPA license, preferred but not required
  • Experience in a publicly traded company and/or Life Sciences industry, preferred but not required
  • Experience with accounting ERP systems
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP, balance sheet and income statement methods, internal controls, and other areas related to financial reporting requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent computer skills, to include proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with intermediate knowledge of Excel
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and possesses quantitative and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to maintain highest standards of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to function independently and exercise good judgement, as well as be a team-player
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of management

Reporting Structure:

This position currently has supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Senior Director, Accounting Operations.
