The lab of Dr. Yuan Cheng in the Selection and Modality Engineering Research Department at Amgen is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow at our state-of-the-art research facility located in Thousand Oaks, Ca.

The duration of the fellowship is 3 years with the option to extend for an additional year. The qualified candidate will work at the interface of chemical biology, biochemistry and synthetic chemistry and apply their skills in developing new technologies and platforms for protein-protein conjugation, generation and screening of hybrid therapeutics. This position will work independently and with various teams including collaboration with academic groups. This position offers flexibility and independence in selecting the course of action and permits exploration of existing and emerging technologies. The Postdoc will publish scientific manuscripts about the developed technologies and their application, as well as any significant discoveries from the use of these technologies.

The initial focus of the postdoctoral fellow will include:

• Preparation and characterization of protein-protein conjugates

• Exploration of emerging recombinant protein engineering technologies including genetic code expansion

• Exploration of new chemical conjugation methods such as site-specific conjugation, enzyme-catalyzed bond formation and bioortogoanal reactions using encoded unnatural amino acids

• Development of novel chemical conjugation methods

• Development and implementation of automation platforms for generation and screening of combinatorial conjugate libraries

Basic qualifications

• PhD at the time of appointment

Preferred qualifications

• PhD in Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemistry or a related field

• Cloning, protein expression (mammalian and/or bacterial), purification and analytical methods (incl. HPLC, large molecule mass spec)

• Experience in bioconjugation and protein chemistry

• Experience in novel biochemical technology development

• Knowledge of automation and screening platforms and biological assays

• Background in structural or computational biology is a plus

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work comfortably within a large team of scientists and engineers with diverse technical and cultural backgrounds
