Adverum is looking for a highly motivated and innovative Principal Scientist, AAV Technology Lead, with strong leadership and communication skills to join the Research team. In this role you will build, lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of cell and molecular biologists to develop next generation AAV vector technologies and to effectively collaborate with leaders across functions to advance pipeline projects. The AAV Technology Lead will be responsible for designing and optimizing AAV viral capsids and gene expression cassettes including regulatable and tissue specific expression constructs, and work closely with other scientists, functional teams and collaborators to advance therapeutic candidates to development. This is an exciting opportunity to be on the forefront of gene delivery innovation and be part of an outstanding team and organization dedicated to developing transformative gene therapies.
What you'll do:
  • Build and lead a team of talented scientists dedicated to engineering next generation AAV vector technologies by providing scientific, technical and strategic direction, and efficient execution
  • Evaluate and implement innovative approaches to optimize viral vectors, transgenes and gene expression cassettes to achieve specific targeting, robust efficacy, transduction and safety for a variety of pipeline programs
  • Using molecular biology and protein engineering expertise, devise and execute on strategies to design and characterize next generation AAV capsids for a broad range of tissues
  • Interface with the Candidate Process Development colleagues for production and manufacturability assessment of lead candidates towards development
  • Offer innovative approaches to scientific questions and troubleshooting efforts
  • Identify key issues and allocate resources to support goals and progress of the pipeline
  • Provide expert opinions and develop effective group leadership within Adverum
  • Partner with Research, Preclinical and Analytical leadership to strategically direct platform-enabling research
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the organization and build partnerships with experts in the field.
  • Ability to write scientific manuscripts, review regulatory documents and represent Adverum at national and international gene therapy conferences.
  • Stay up to date on the literature and technical advancements to improve AAV gene therapy capabilities by identifying novel approaches and proposing experimental plans to test the hypotheses with the internal team and by the utilization of Contract Research Organizations.
  • Evaluate strategic external licensing opportunities and participate and due diligence when needed
  • Contribute to a vibrant organizational culture that embraces innovation, curiosity, continuous learning, scientific rigor, professional development and collaboration

About you:
  • PhD in virology, molecular biology or protein engineering or closely related discipline with at least 8 years of relevant experience in AAV mediated gene delivery
  • At least 5 years of experience managing and mentoring direct reports including PhD level scientists
  • Knowledge of AAV gene therapeutic design, production and characterization
  • Hands-on experience in engineering AAV vectors for targeted deliveries using molecular biology, protein and capsid engineering approaches to optimize transgene expression, function and tissue specificity
  • Proven capability to identify, develop and apply new technologies to pipeline projects
  • Recognized leader in scientific specialty as evidenced by publications in leading peer reviewed journals
  • Strong management/leadership skills and demonstrated ability to lead a group of scientists to deliver on objectives in defined timelines is required
  • Outstanding communication, organizational and decision-making skills, with a successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional scientific teams is required
