Neuroscientist & Scientific Program Manager

Working with QBI Director Nevan Krogan at the University of California, San Francisco, the Neuroscientist & Program Manager will oversee and coordinate neuroscience focused collaborative research efforts of over 50 scientists across academic institutions, global collaborators, and industry partners.

Specifically, this position will:

• Launch new projects and provide strategic planning to our neuroscience grant portfolio

• Provide scientific oversight including review and advice on study design, - modeling, data analysis and validation, and suggesting new approaches.

• Track progress toward project goals, facilitate coordination among participating partners, evaluate project data and results, and report project status to leadership

• Identify new funding opportunities, coordinate submission of new project proposals and preparation of manuscripts.

Our current projects in the neuro space apply systems biology approaches to unravel mechanisms of Tauopathies (Alzheimer’s Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia), Pain, and neuropsychiatric diseases and include expertise in fields such as proteomics, structural biology, metabolism, genomics, and integrative modeling. Our projects leverage a wide array of experimental approaches with a collaborative infrastructure necessary for long-term investigation. Our portfolio includes the Psychiatric Cell Mapping Initiative (PCMI) (https://pcmi.ucsf.edu/) which aims to systematically map the physical and genetic interaction networks underlying Autism, Tourette, epilepsy, schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders and identify key molecular pathways that can be targeted pharmacologically. PCMI is supported by a Collaborative U01 award as part of the Convergent Neurosciences Consortium at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) at National Institutes of Health (NIH) and includes a team of geneticists, structural biologists, neurobiologists, systems biologists, and clinicians.

The ideal candidate should be independent, a self-starter with a can-do attitude and someone who likes to suggest new approaches when needed. Excellent management skills and a strong research record are essential, including evidence of publishing in high impact peer-reviewed journals and experience in writing and submitting proposals for federally sponsored research. Applicants will have strong written, verbal, and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and work in an interdisciplinary team environment. This is not a faculty research position.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in Neuroscience

• Demonstrated high productivity and successful record publishing in high impact journals

• Demonstrated experience as a research project lead

• Experience managing collaborative projects among multiple laboratories

• Experience writing research proposals and manuscripts for publication

• Experience managing direct research budgets

Preferred Qualifications:

• Post-graduate training in the field

• Experience with the biotech/pharma industry landscape

• A demonstrated track record of effectively using quantitative approaches to biological problems

• Understanding of large-scale proteomics data and placing it in a biological context

• Experience in handling large scale data

• Success in securing external research funding

• Experience teaching, mentoring, and advising students and trainees

• Community outreach, service to your profession, service to your institution
