JOB PURPOSE

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the strategy, oversight, evaluation, and career development of research team focused on cardiac regeneration. Interacts with other corporate departments to influence corporate strategy and policies. Ensures his/her team supports corporate goals and the research objectives of other teams.
  1. Recommends expansion or curtailment of pre-clinical trials on basis of experimental results of scientific information. Go/no go decision.
  2. Contributes to the development of corporate research and therapeutic discovery goals including identifying, developing, and implementing new strategic opportunities for R&D.
  3. Provides inclusive mentorship to others by leading in presentations and scientific discussion.
  4. Liaison to development function and executive leadership regarding project timelines and deliverables.
  5. Provides strategic direction in creating patent applications.
  6. Creates strategic partnerships that lead to collaborations through networking and publication.
  7. Understands and applies relevant scientific literature to the design of experimental protocols. This may include literature from outside of the Scientist's primary field of research.
  8. Acts as an expert consultant and scientific resource for others in the department.
  9. Supervises teams of researchers to ensure the timely execution and delivery of research objectives in support of assigned projects/research. This includes working with cross-functional research teams, ensuring that research is adapted to meet changes in corporate scientific priorities.
  10. Contributes to new principles and concepts in the field and ensure their documentation through the initiation of scientific publications and representing Sana through presentations at conferences. This includes assisting in drafting patent applications.
  11. Prepares and compiles research findings to support regulatory filings. Ensures that all team members maintain timely and accurate records through the completion of lab notebooks.
  12. Provides rationale for budgets and capital expenditures that support assigned research projects and staffing levels necessary for the timely completion of assigned research.
  13. Ensures that appropriate team staffing is determined and maintained. This includes determining the best candidates to hire, ensuring continuing high levels of performance of existing team members, and ensuring timely and appropriate feedback - both career and performance - is provided.
  14. Communicates company standards for lab practices and company policies, and ensures that all within the research teams comply.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Qualifications

MD or Ph.D. with a minimum of 7 years of cardiovascular research experience (industry or academic). A recognized expert in his/her field of specialization. Demonstrated experience and expertise in team leadership and employee development usually gained through a minimum of five (5) years of team leadership and supervision.
  • Leads from the bench. Well versed in a wide array of laboratory techniques and experienced in their use. Strong publication record from graduate and post-doctoral work is expected.
  • Actively engaged with developing and maintaining cross functional networks within the larger enterprise.
  • Experienced with interpersonal skills and an ability to adapt communication style to interact effectively with a range of collaborators including research associates, technical experts, computational biologists, manufacturing experts, and therapeutic teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail and data quality, and experience working on diverse collaborative teams.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems.
  • Liaison to development function and executive leadership regarding project timelines and deliverables.
  • Serves as in-house or outside scientific advisor.
  • Participates in patent applications.
  • Creates strategic partnerships that lead to collaborations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MD or PhD with 8+ years of research leadership experience following post-doctoral work
  • Expertise in stem cell biology, heart development, cardiac electrical and mechanical physiology, and heart disease
  • Experience with cardiac differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells, standard gene expression analyses, genome-wide analyses, bioinformatics, gene editing, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy
  • Experience with small and large animal models of heart disease
  • Ability to lead a diverse and inclusive team

  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person, subject to certain exceptions, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Evening and weekend work required on a as needed basis
  • Travel between Seattle and the company's Cambridge and South San Francisco sites will be necessary
