The Impact You’ll Make

  • We are seeking an experienced, confident and motivated patent attorney who thrives in a dynamic and high-energy environment. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues on IP protection for chemical matter and other pharmaceutical-related discoveries by Recursion, working independently with minimal supervision. The role requires engaging effectively and independently with internal functions such as research and development teams, and with colleagues in business development, finance, clinical development, regulatory and manufacturing. The IP counsel must possess integrity and sound judgment, be an analytical and creative thinker, have exceptional oral and written communication skills, and be proficient in time-management and task prioritization. The role involves the following tasks:

    • Prosecution:
      • Conduct and manage preparation and prosecution of patent applications to provide US and international coverage of company inventions in the area of pharmaceuticals, with minimal supervision
      • Collaborate with and manage outside counsel for IP prosecution and counseling
      • Identify new IP and/or technical/scientific issues potentially affecting IP, working closely with scientists and leaders
    • Counseling:
      • Participate in shaping the company’s IP strategy, processes, policies, and procedures
      • Provide counsel on patentability, freedom to operate, non-infringement, and invalidity matters consistent with our IP strategy
      • Diligence on company and third-party IP assets
      • Conduct and interpret FTO, patent landscape and third-party patent analyses
      • Interpret laws, rulings and regulations and share relevant information with colleagues
      • Create and support a culture of innovation, including by educating employees on the inventive process, documenting inventions, and trade secrets
    • Transactions:
      • Perform diligence on potential in-licensed IP and support out-licensing diligence
      • Participate in IP-related transactional work, including setting and complying with contractual obligations relating to IP
      • Analyze and draft IP-related contractual clauses
    • Individual projects and other duties as required

The Team You’ll Join 

You will be joining a dynamic team of seven (four attorneys, a stock plan manager, a contracts manager and a legal operations director), which will be continuing to grow in 2021-22 and beyond. You will have an important role in supporting the growth of our newly-public company and the strategic planning for contracts and records management across all departments.


The Experience You’ll Need

  • The Skills and Attributes You’ll Need

    • At least ten years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the life sciences in the US and internationally at a law firm or in-house, including patent portfolio management
    • Registered to practice at the USPTO
    • Admitted to practice in at least one state and eligible to practice law in Utah as in-house counsel
    • Deep knowledge of and experience with patent and trade secret laws, particularly in the field of biotechnology
    • Ability to operate independently with scientists and business leaders to create an intellectual property portfolio aligned with company strategy

    Desirable skills

    • An advanced degree or significant experience in a relevant scientific discipline, particularly chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or computational genetics
    • Emotional intelligence, confidence and project or other leadership experience
    • Experience with contested proceedings (e.g., IPR, opposition, litigation)
    • Creativity in patent processes and strong problem-solving and communication skills
    • Flexibility, strong organization skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize
    • Experience as in-house counsel
    • Broad range of experience handling small molecule IP; additional experience with biologics preferred
    • Experience with all the following: patent licensing, litigation, opinion work, and diligence
    • Ability to work collaboratively with outside counsel, business partners, and co-workers
    • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team, depending on the situation
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet short deadlines
    • Flexibility to travel as required
