AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with a single consolidated site in South San Francisco due to be completed by the end of 2021, and is focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots will work together in the San Francisco Bay Area. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments.  AbbVie is also expanding their expertise through partnering with companies leading the way in emerging biologic technologies including oncolytic virus’ and CAR-T cells. This position is based at AbbVie in the Bay Area location.

 

The successful candidate will participate in discovery synthetic chemistry efforts aimed at identifying and developing novel linker/payload technologies for preclinical evaluation and clinical use.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Have strong synthetic skills, outstanding attention to detail and excellent record-keeping abilities.
  • Synthesize, purify and characterize biologically-active organic small molecules and linkers through multi-step synthesis.
  • Contribute to chemistry efforts for project team(s), applying medicinal chemistry principles, SAR principles and structure-based design to identify and optimize lead molecules.
  • Contribute to optimization and validation of synthetic routes applicable for synthesis of linker-drugs on multigram scale.
  • Maintain excellent experimental records for research and development efforts.
  • Contribute to development and optimization of analytical characterization methods.
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate into individual projects.
  • Effective writer and communicator of research or other regulatory materials.
  • Assist in managing external CRO chemists.
  • Work with colleagues and legal department to establish and defend new Intellectual Property.

 


Qualifications

 

  • Senior Scientist I: BS or MS in synthetic organic chemistry and typically 10 years of experience (BS) or 8 years of experience (MS), or PhD and typically 0-4 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated competency and experience in multistep organic synthesis
  • Strong small molecule purification skills
  • Knowledge of common spectroscopic and analytical techniques (NMR, LCMS, HPLC)
  • Highly organized and disciplined record keeping
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Excellent laboratory practices and safety techniques are essential
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
