Job Details

JOB PURPOSE

The In Vivo Specialist, CNS is responsible for the in vivo assessment of manufactured glial cells in Sana's Cambridge CNS lab. This individual will both manage and participate in the transplant and post-transplant evaluation operations of Sana's CNS Therapy lab, with direct oversight of at least one of its experimental programs. This position includes technically diverse bench and analytic work as well as the training of research staff in techniques and equipment use, across the CNS in vivo program.

The In Vivo Specialist, CNS will report on a direct basis to the Director, CNS Cell Biology, and work under the broader direction of the Head of CNS Therapy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performing both neonatal and adult small animal surgeries and cell transplants
  • Neurohistological processing including tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry of experimental brain tissues
  • Assuring the quality and integrity of all data collection and documentation
  • Microscopy and image analysis of processed samples
  • Coordinating, and in some cases conducting, behavioral analysis of animal subjects
  • Assisting with the management of experimental rodent colonies
  • Assuring compliance with all relevant lab safety and biosafety regulations
  • Formulating animal use procedures and experiment-specific protocols as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic Qualifications

The successful candidate is expected to have extensive hands-on expertise in stereotactic small animal surgery as well as neural cell transplantation and the downstream neurohistological analysis of transplanted animals, particularly quantitative histology. Candidates should also be familiar with concepts of transgenic mouse husbandry and identification of suitable mouse models. The successful candidate will have sufficient personal expertise to teach as well as troubleshoot these techniques. In addition, the candidate is expected to be able to contribute towards the maintenance of both the histology and behavior lab environments, including day to day operations and personnel coordination, as well as assuring the quality of data collection.
  • BA/MA in neuroscience or cell biology, chemistry or biotechnology, or a related field
  • 5+ years of post-college academic or industry experience in neural and glial cell biology
  • Significant expertise in and understanding of rodent neuroanatomy
  • Significant experience with immunochemistry, microscopy and digital image analysis
  • Experience in working with preclinical models.
  • Expertise in mouse colony management and genotyping
  • Expertise in methods of mouse behavioral assessment
  • Excellent interpersonal, communicative and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office, and with standard programs for statistical analysis (e.g., GraphPad Prism) and slide imaging and quantitative histology (e.g., StereoInvestigator)
  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person, subject to certain exceptions, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in neuroscience/neurobiology
  • Significant experience in rodent neurosurgery
  • Experience in basic cell culture practices
  • Experience in tissue preparation and histology

WORKING CONDITIONS

Occasional scheduled weekend and holiday coverage may be required, on rotation with technical staff, in order to ensure project performance at defined time points.
