Element Biosciences is a multi-disciplinary startup focused on innovating genetic analysis tools for the research and clinical markets. We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated scientist to further our understanding of surface chemistry components for sequencing and develop new innovations to support the advancement of Element Biosciences’ new NGS platforms. 


Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel surface chemistries to enhance sequencing performance.
  • Apply fundamental understanding of surface chemistry to the design, synthesis and evaluation of surface treatment using existing or novel methodologies.
  • Design and develop experiments to understand interactions of molecules/biomolecules on surfaces.
  • Become the expert in surface coating technologies used for our products.
  • Built Element Biosciences’ IP portfolio. 
  • Interact closely with other teams to evaluate performance of designed surface.
  • Support our development, operations, and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot and surface chemistry challenges.



Requirements:

  • Ph.D./M.S.degree in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related field.
  • 0-3 years of industrial work experience in an R&D setting (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered).
  • Strong background in surface chemistry and polymer chemistry
  • Solid understanding of chemical reaction mechanism between interfaces with the aim to guide the synthesis of surface coating materials.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in surface related applications such as hydrophobic coatings and alkaline resistant films.
  • Strong understanding in polymer physics and structure-property relationships in polymers.
  • Experience with nano material surface coatings for added functions is highly desired.
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as jmp, R, ImageJ or MATLAB
  • Working knowledge of bioconjugation techniques and molecular biology
  • Working knowledge of surface analytical techniques such as AFM, Ellipsometry, FTIR, SEM, TOF-SIMS and XPS.
  • Creative and independent thinker; excellent communication skills; good team worker; ability to multitask and work independently; ability to find creative solutions to problems are a great plus.
