Adverum is looking for an Associate Director / Director, Head of the Development Testing Center (DTC) to join the Technology Development (TechDev) team at our Redwood City, CA office.  This position reports directly into the VP of TechDev and will play a key leadership role to help advance Adverum’s lead program, ADVM-022, to commercial launch and our pipeline products into and through the clinic.  The incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and then executing upon the operational vision of the DTC to support the various departments of TechDev team.
In this role, the incumbent will be responsible for organizing and developing the DTC team which is responsible for the high throughput / high efficiency optimization, implementation and execution of analytical assays in support of other TechDev departments.  Optimization and testing efforts will be focused on assays for AAV products, baculovirus, and several cell types.  As such, the incumbent will be expected to have a strong technical background knowledge of various analytical techniques applicable to biologic products, including ELSIA, biophysical/biochemical, chromatographic and cellular based assays.  A strong working partnership with peers in the other TechDev groups (MSAT, Process Development and Candidate Process Development), Analytical Development, Quality Control and Program Management will be key.  In addition, the ability of the incumbent to develop, motivate, and align a diverse team of scientists and engineers working on numerous projects will be vital to ensure the flexibility, efficiency, and success of the team. 
This role requires strong, lead-by-example orientated leadership skills, a collaborative Team focus, the ability to juggle immediate needs with long term goals, and an ability to implement organizational structure to a dynamic, growing environment. The incumbent is expected to be well versed in high throughput testing environments, and experienced with managing groups in Quality Control and/or Assay Development settings.  Direct prior experience with AAV analytics is a plus.
What you'll do
  • Working with the VP of TechDev and Head of Assay Development to set up the DTC laboratory and staff the DTC laboratory.
  • Exhibit strong leadership and managerial skills, supervise a group of up to 15 Analysts and 4 operational leaders.
  • Develop processes for managing laboratory documentation for non-GMP governance and critical reagents.
  • Be accountable for all laboratory operations for the DTC and for managing the capacity model for the DTC per requirements presented by the TechDev team.
  • Provide oversight of external testing laboratory activities including management of analytical testing, data review, troubleshooting, method improvement, generation of reports, and technical support where needed.
  • Author, review and sign off on appropriate protocols, transferred SOPs and testing reports
  • Collaborate with fellow peers in Analytical Development and Quality Control.
  • Mentor, develop and support a passionate team of individuals focused on high performance.

About you
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology or related technical discipline with 7+ years of relevant, industrial experience (M.S./B.S. in corresponding fields with 12+ yrs).
  • A strong scientific track record with experience leading independent research with the ability to train and mentor research associates.
  • Experience managing a team of managers and analysts in a laboratory setting.
  • Prior experience and expertise working with biologics based analytics is a must.  A solid understanding of AAV biology and/or AAV analytics is a plus.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented mindset, able to solves problems in a goal-focused fashion with capacity to coordinate tasks across multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and influencing skills across levels/disciplines.
