Amgens Process Development (PD) organization is seeking a highly motivated and creative scientist to join our newly formed High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) team at Thousand Oaks, CA. HTE team members are responsible for accelerating scientific innovation and advancing the synthetics pipeline through rapid, automated parallel experimentation.
The successful candidate will utilize automation and HTE to support a range of process development activities, from route scouting to route optimization to process characterization, and will work cross-functionally with medicinal chemists, process chemists, chemical engineers, and analytical chemists to advance Amgens synthetic portfolio. They will also drive the development of innovative technologies and be a champion for technology and automation in the process development organization.
Scientific/Technical ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with chemists and engineers to solve chemistry and process challenges using high-throughput technology and automation.
Independently design, execute, and interpret high-throughput experiments for a variety of HTE workflows such as reaction optimization, extraction, solubility, and crystallization.
Actively contribute to drug substance development teams by providing project updates, data interpretation, and technical recommendations.
Identify and advance opportunities to utilize HTE to accelerate pharmaceutical development.
Establish new workflows using automation equipment, such as automated solid/liquid handlers and high-throughput analytical systems.
Maintain and troubleshoot automation systems and develop new protocols.
Evaluate novel technologies that can enhance pre-existing HTE workflows and/or introduce new capabilities.
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for HTE by staying current on advancements in high-throughput technology and applications in synthetic chemistry.
Expands the capabilities of the department and resolves scientific/technical challenges.
Collaborates with scientists and professionals outside the department.
Provides training to PD staff on equipment and software usage.

Basic QualificationsDoctorate degree or Doctorate degree by 2022
OR
Masters degree and 4 years of scientific experience
OR
Bachelors degree and 6 years of scientific experience
Preferred QualificationsDoctorate degree in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Synthetic Chemistry
Post-doctoral research experience
Track record of demonstrated scientific accomplishments in the field of organic chemistry
Works effectively in a multi-disciplinary team of chemists, engineers and attribute scientists
A broad knowledge of organic synthesis is essential, including familiarity with latest developments in the fields of catalysis, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and C-H activation
Experience with high-throughput automation systems (e.g., Unchained Labs, Andrew Alliance, Chronect, etc.) and data visualization software (e.g., Spotfire) is preferred
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to champion new technologies
Be able to maintain a productive lab presence
Familiarity with Environmental Health and Safety expectations for chemical laboratories
Experience in analytical techniques such as NMR, HPLC, GC, and MS is preferred
Knowledge of basic office and chemistry software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ChemDraw, and SciFinder
