The global Head of Laboratory Operations will lead teams across Sana's three geographies responsible for delivering smooth, efficient lab operations and full lifecycle instrumentation support. He/she will be accountable for developing and executing on strategies for management of laboratory operations, laboratory design and configuration, and Sana's R&D instrumentation portfolio. The incumbent will also serve as a key member of site and corporate operational leadership teams.


Laboratory Operations
  • Provide strategic direction and technical supervision as leader of LabOps teams across sites responsible for ensuring day-to-day smooth operations of Sana R&D laboratories including:
    • Lab supply inventory management
    • Routine maintenance of general-use equipment
    • Safety inspections
    • Bio/chem waste removal to centralized pick-up sites
    • Sample shipment
  • Develop and support globally aligned lab stewardship program:
    • Engage functional stakeholders to develop globally-applicable RACI for lab operations tasks and communications
    • Identify individuals responsible for setting requirements for use of spaces and equipment in lab areas
    • Develop methods and cadence of information sharing between LabOps, lab stewards, and all lab users
    • Implement tracking tools and program review cadence to measure success
  • Facilitate the Lab Ops organization's partnership with EHS in developing, delivering, and maintaining safety programs
  • Identify opportunities for centralized services and develop strategy for internal staffing versus external support

  • Implement tools and analysis processes for strategic management of Sana's R&D instrumentation portfolio, working with key partners in Finance, IT, and technical functions, incorporating needs for research flexibility and anticipated clinical-phase requirements. Examples:
    • Inventory & CMMS systems
    • Instrumentation lifecycle management
    • Service contracts
    • Scheduling and capacity utilization
  • Establish governance structure to facilitate solid decision-making on large capital purchases which incorporates:
    • Instrumentation technical requirements
    • Harmonization value, both technical and purchase/maintenance costs
    • Safety and waste stream impacts
    • Current and anticipated capacity utilization
  • Develop strategy and staffing/consultant model for instrumentation support, balancing the value of prompt onsite service and local expertise with the costs of internal versus external support

Laboratory Design & Configuration
  • Serve as lab operations representative in capital project design and delivery teams
  • Develop and maintain labspace footprint demand models for incorporation in Sana's Real Estate strategy
  • Establish laboratory design principles for space and workflow efficiency for incorporation in future capital project planning

  • Engage in crucial conversations by providing and receiving feedback supporting the growth and development of team members
  • Demonstrate ability to engage and effectively influence team members across multidisciplinary teams while prioritizing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Drive curiosity, scientific rigor and excellent problem-solving skills across a fast-paced performance driven environment

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration or a related field
  • At least 15+ years of related, demonstrated laboratory and instrumentation operational leadership experience
  • Proven track record in managing and scaling lab operations, known in industry as a person who runs highly efficient lab/instrumentation operations
  • Demonstrated highly effective communication and organization skills
  • Sophisticated fiscal planning and leadership skills, with a strong understanding of the complexities of a multi-site environment
  • An inclusive individual who thrives in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence, cooperation, and the incorporation of multiple points of view
  • Is flexible and adaptable - Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced working environment and work in a diplomatic and tactful manner with others
  • Must be a creative and proactive problem solver; keen ability to anticipate needs in a lab environment, solving problems with sound judgment
  • Experience managing and prioritizing inputs from diverse stakeholders to deploy a plan that meets the needs of the business
  • 7+ years of proven success building and leading high functioning matrix teams across functions, including Research, Development, and operational organizations
  • Working safely in person on a predictable and regular in-person basis is an essential job function for this position and the Company requires that all individuals working in-person, subject to certain exceptions, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

  • This position requires 24-hour response availability for emergency situations
  • Assume regular travel (20%) to other Sana sites in Seattle and South San Francisco
