PacBio has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Accounting. At Pacific Biosciences (NASDAQ: PACB), we are passionate about developing high-quality, innovative technologies and systems that impact areas of critical importance, including human biomedical research, plant and animal sciences, and microbiology and infectious disease studies. In particular, our technology is being used for pandemic surveillance with scientists assessing potential COVID-19 mutations based on sequencing data generated from our sequencing platforms. The Role & The Team

This highly visible leadership position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer and leads the company's global accounting organization in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment. This position is highly visible and requires strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills with process improvement expertise, an ability to implement operational processes and appropriate internal control procedures to ensure accurate, reliable and timely financial information is provided to internal and external stakeholders. This role routinely partners and collaborates with senior executives, committees, peers and external auditors to influence strategic objectives and ensure outcomes in a manner consistent with accounting policies, generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP), Sarbanes-Oxley and other applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, including direct supervision of managers responsible for protection of the Company's assets and accurate financial reporting
  • Direct and lead accounting teams in the development, implementation, and oversight of company-wide accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP, SEC, and other government regulations
  • Provide leadership required to strengthen and grow the accounting team, with a commitment to recruiting, training, and mentoring
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of reporting; oversee the preparation and communication of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements that comply with public company requirements
  • Identify key risks and implement internal controls to effectively manage and mitigate risks and improve the operations of the business
  • Ensure maintenance of effective internal controls and appropriate accounting procedures, including evaluation of processes and controls for compliance with SOX 404
  • Play a leading role in company-wide projects that impact the Accounting department, including system implementation, M&A integration and policy setting
  • Leverage technology to build scalable and sustainable processes to create efficiencies, streamline accounting operations in an increasingly complex environment, improve the employee experience, and support the company's growth
  • Manage optimization of the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Collaborate with FP&A and other business partners on the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports for internal and external audiences
  • Lead preparation for and management of our external audits, as well as other ad hoc audit activities
  • Lead the global expansion of our accounting operations, developing scalable solutions and ensuring statutory compliance
  • Manage compliance related to federal, state, and local income and sales and use taxes
  • Manage relationship and reporting matters with external auditors to resolve complex accounting and auditing matters
  • Partner closely with the SEC reporting team to support external reporting requirements
  • Prepare financial reporting for presentation to the Audit and Compensation Committees and present information when requested
  • Recruit top talent and mentor team members, helping them reach their peak potential; foster a culture of continuous improvement complete with benchmarks for measuring successful performance

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting; CPA and Big 4 Public Accounting experience preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in technical accounting, including 5 years in a management capacity
  • Strong leadership skills and proactive problem-solving approach
  • Life science and manufacturing industries accounting experience a plus
  • Experience in writing complex technical accounting position papers
  • Strategic thinking and leadership experience with an emphasis on relationship management and interacting with all levels within an organization as well as with external auditors
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Deep understanding of US GAAP requirements and a strong ability to interpret and apply GAAP to real-life issues at hand
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented self-starter; ability to work independently and collaborate to meet deadlines; effectively work with team to expedite completion of critical projects
  • Collaborative business partner, adept in building cross-functional relationships to drive results
  • Ability to inspire action and coordinate simultaneous initiatives
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to develop and mentor staff
  • Proven track record in driving projects and process improvement initiatives
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and Power Point
