The Regional Medical Director supports US Medical Affairs to execute the US Medical Affairs' strategy; ensures accurate, robust, and appropriate medical/scientific exchange of knowledge and clinical expertise with US stakeholders primarily focused on clinical stage Gene Therapy products and partners with internal stakeholders in driving success.

  • Executes the company's US Field Medical Affairs' strategies/tactics for one or more of the following: Rett Syndrome, FA (Friedreich s Ataxia) and/or SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy)
  • Maintains in-depth understanding of the disease state, product, competitors, marketplace, related medical areas and regulatory guidelines
  • Identifies and develops professional relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) within assigned territory
  • Develops and maintains territory engagement plans with KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) and other key external stakeholders that are aligned with the US Medical Affairs plan
  • Acts as the primary resource to HCPs who request information on Novartis Gene Therapies products, ensuring accurate and appropriate responses in a timely manner
  • Works closely with the Account Directors to identify and appropriately engage with medical influencers/decision makers to help educate the payer and market access community on Novartis Gene Therapies and related disease states
  • Partners with Government Affairs personnel as requested to provide disease state and gene therapy education to their customers
  • Provides timely intelligence on emerging clinical/scientific trends back to the organization, along with opportunities aimed at better meeting the needs of the external healthcare community
  • Appropriately responds to unsolicited requests for clinical data per SOP guidance
  • Supports company research initiatives across development at the request of Clinical to include, but not limited to: site evaluation and identification, recruitment, investigator meetings, external expert identification, accrual enhancement, scientific and disease state education, and study management
  • Supports the planning and execution of medical affairs meetings with external stakeholders (e.g., advisory boards, symposia, conferences, etc.)
  • Actively contributes to the development and execution of the congress strategy and KOL engagement plan by proactively engaging with KOLs at scientific congresses, including inclusion of home office personnel as appropriate
  • Leverages scientific knowledge and KOL relationships to match KOL areas of interest with Novartis Gene Therapies priority activities and needs
  • Supports investigator-initiated trials and grants through review, submission, evaluation, and recommendation of concepts/proposals
  • Collaborate with internal patient advocacy relations function to serve as a primary field contact for national and regional patient and disease state associations and organizations
  • Partners and collaborates effectively with internal business partners (field and HQ) as appropriate in support of company business goals
  • Able to lead cross-functional projects and independently represent the field medical team in all aspects in field-based and house office meetings
  • Manages budget responsibilities efficiently regarding controllable expenses and performs all administrative requirements in a timely, accurate and compliant manner
  • Other related duties as assigned

  • Masters in nursing or genetic counselor.
  • PhD, PharmD, MD, NP or genetic counselor preferred.
  • 3 years of Medical Affairs experience (ideally as an Medical Science Liaison (MSL) and preferably in the biotech industry).
  • Experience working in rare or orphan disease space.
  • Payer and HEOR experience.
  • Experience working with IITs.
  • Experience working with advocacy groups preferred.
  • Neurology, neurodegenerative disease and/or pediatric specialty experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong formal presentation skills.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills, especially in territory management and KOL development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to work closely with both external physicians/scientists and numerous internal business partners.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of integrity, represent the company's high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism.
  • High proficiency in problem solving and strong scientific analytical skills.
  • Willingness/ability to travel up to 60 % and internationally at times.

The level of this position will be based on the final candidate's qualifications.
