Position Summary:

The Director or Senior Director of Electrical & Software Engineering (Dermatology) leads a multidisciplinary team of engineers developing and deploying a medical device that delivers high-voltage nanosecond pulsed electric fields optimized for dermatologic indications. This individual is responsible for providing leadership to a team of electrical and software engineers/technicians, managing development from concepts and early prototypes to volume production, working closely with Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Sales and Customer Support to ensure success of the dermatologic product family. This role requires seasoned technical management skills along with proven project management experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of highly advanced engineers and technicians through the design and development of a dermatologic system capable of high-voltage nanosecond pulsing.
  • Lead the design, development, and documentation of complex high-voltage pulse generation and measurement systems including system and subsystem software/firmware.
  • Ensure a smooth transition of new products from white board to compliance testing and into manufacturing.
  • Manage projects with cross-functional teams following design control processes while generating requirements/specifications, software architecture and code-reviews, FMEA/Hazard analyses, V&V protocols/reports, etc.
  • Managing the software team in planning features, responding to customer feedback, and assisting with software related investigations.
  • Exhibit a great attitude as a team player who excels in a demanding fast-paced environment. Must be comfortable with wearing multiple hats when needed.
  • Responsible for directly managing project budget and ensuring projects are delivered on-time and onbudget.
  • Hire, develop and motivate a high performing team. Set team’s deliverables/objectives, performance goals, and empower them to deliver on Pulse Biosciences’ strategic priorities and objectives.
  • Understand the company’s quality policy and quality system requirements applicable to tasks.
  • Comply with company policies as well as any regulatory requirements and all applicable health and safety regulations, procedures and work practices.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

  • BS in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science required. MS degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in medical device.
  • 8+ years of experience in a leadership role managing teams. Technical management of a development group with at least eight engineers is a must.
  • Experience leading teams comprised of firmware, software, and electrical engineers in concept-to-production development of complex safety-critical system.
  • Extensive real-time, high-reliability, system software design experience, including RTOSs, bare-metal MCU firmware, communication protocols, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of Unix-like operating systems, with emphasis on RTOSs (QNX, VxWorks, RTLinux, Nucleus, RedHawk, etc.)
  • Knowledge of C/C++ and related compilers and debuggers for application processors (x86) and “bare-metal” microcontrollers (dsPIC and related). Knowledge of Python and scripting for automated test is a plus.
  • Experience with static code analysis tools, such as Understand, Perforce, LDRA, Coverity, etc.
  • Experience with IEC 60601 testing and ensuring a smooth transition into manufacturing. Acting as the lead in conversations with test facilities or CMs.
  • Experience with UI environments/tools, such as Qt, QML, HTML5, wxWidgets, etc. highly desired.


Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements:

  • Proficient knowledge and skill in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Excellent oral written communication skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional managerial skills overseeing highly technical engineers.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC, US and International Quality Systems standards/regulations.
  • Good understanding of object-oriented development and modeling tools, such as Enterprise Architect, MagicDraw, Visual Paradigm, etc.
  • Fundamental understanding of electrical engineering theory, including control systems, filters and noise reduction techniques, transmission lines, EMC, etc.
  • Strong work ethic with a team-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work conscientiously and independent, using good judgment, taking initiative to accomplish short and long-range projects, and recommend actions with minimal direction.
  • Ability to work as a team member, multi-task and be very flexible to adapt to the ever-changing work priorities and requirements of a dynamic, fast growing company.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time. Overnight and/or international travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift 10-15 pounds.
