Job summary

Orchard Therapeutics, Ltd. (OTL) is looking for an Associate Scientist to perform experimental duties related to the development and optimization of lentiviral vector (LVVs) platform(s). This is a great opportunity to join the growing Process Development team within Cell & Gene Therapy Technologies department and contribute to the delivery of Orchard Therapeutics innovative gene-modified cell-based therapeutic products. The job role is lab-based and will include molecular biology, cell line development, process development, process characterization and manufacture of lentiviral vectors.

The job position is for Associate, Senior Associate or Associate Scientist, depending on experience.

Key Elements and Responsibilities

The job holder will:
  • Conduct microbiology workflows to prepare plasmids stocks and cloning to generate plasmid and lentiviral vector constructs;
  • Conduct cell culture and transfections to produce lentiviral vectors;
  • Develop stable cell lines for LVVs;
  • Support the development and improvement of process(es) (USP and DSP) for LVVs;
  • Contribute to the development and perform analytical assays to characterise LVV processes and products;
  • Execute experimental plans, analyse experimental data, maintain experimental results in relevant databases;
  • Prepare, review and complete study reports and protocols/SOPs;
  • Contribute to the routine lab maintenance;
  • Participate in group and project meetings and discussions;
  • Present work to the team;
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.


Required knowledge
  • Experience in cell line culture techniques and handling of adherent and suspension cell lines in different culture systems, with demonstrated skills in aseptic techniques is a must have;
  • Experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry with a primary focus on the development, manufacture and delivery of viral vectors, preferably retro and lentiviral vectors is highly desirable;
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, including cloning, standard DNA and RNA technology, analyses with qPCR, recombinant protein expression and assessments with SDS-PAGE, Western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry and others is highly desirable;
  • Hands-on experience with cell line development, preferably retro or lentiviral vectors;
  • Involvement in the development of LVV production and purification processes is highly desirable;
  • Experience in developing and performing analytical methods for stable cell lines and LVV characterization is highly desirable;
  • Use of more specialist lab equipment e.g. flow cytometers, cell counters, cell sorters, microscopes and imaging systems, bioreactors, AKTA, TFF systems, controlled-rate freezers is highly desirable;
  • Proficient with MS office, Prism, SnapGene, FlowJo, electronic lab-books and other commonly used softwares is highly desirable;

Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate in a fast paced, multidisciplinary industrial environment is mandatory;
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, or independently as necessary;
  • Ability to document and maintain record of lab work, raw data and results;
  • Strong organization and planning skills;
  • Good communication and written skills for report writing, team communications and presentations;
  • Independently design and execute experiments following laboratory procedures, appropriately analyse data and provide an interpretation of results is highly desirable;
  • Creativeness, motivation, and troubleshooting skills to solve problems and/or develop new technical capabilities is highly desirable.

  • A minimum MSc or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline: bioprocessing, cell and gene therapy, biological sciences, biotechnology, etc.
