Research Tech - Senior
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Boston, MA
Full-Time

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill a full-time research technician position in Dr. David Weinstock’s laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. We are a translational leukemia and lymphoma research laboratory that uses a variety of biochemical, molecular, and cell biology approaches to identify new therapeutic targets, develop preclinical models of disease, and test novel therapeutics both in vitro and in vivo. The research technician would work on a project studying mechanisms of response and resistance to JAK2 kinase inhibition in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and myeloproliferative neoplasms. The successful candidate will be a team player capable of handling multiple tasks and adaptable to a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities:

  • The senior technician will be responsible for conducting experiments to advance the research progress in the lab. As part of this work, they will be responsible for the following:
  • Maintenance of cell lines in culture, testing novel therapeutics using vitro proliferation assays, and generation of drug-resistant cell lines.
  • Basic handling of DNA and RNA including sample isolation, PCR, and preparation of samples for sequencing.
  • Protein isolation from cells and primary murine samples, Western blotting, and immunoprecipitation experiments.
  • CRISPR guide RNA design and molecular cloning.
  • Transfection and retroviral / lentiviral transduction of murine and human cells for overexpression experiments or CRISPR-Cas9 knockout experiments.
  • Multicolor flow cytometry.
  • Breeding mice and testing novel therapeutics in mouse models of leukemia. Previous experience working with mice is required.
  • Analyzing genomic datasets commensurate with previous experience. Previous experience in bioinformatics would be an asset, but is not required.
  • Preparation of reagents and media used in lab experiments.
  • Maintaining detailed records of their laboratory work, results, and data analyses.
  • Sharing responsibilities for operation and maintenance of standard lab equipment.

Qualifications:

  • The technician should be able to work independently, but also be open and receptive to suggestions and feedback from the team/project leader. Attention to detail in completing tasks and a strong work ethic is essential. This includes willingness to critically read and keep up to date on the latest scientific literature, logically troubleshoot problems, offer both intellectual and technical input during collaborative meetings, and assist in the preparation of presentations, grants, and manuscripts. The technician should have flexibility in their schedule to work on some evenings and weekends as needed to meet project goals. We seek candidates who have at least 2 years of availability.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field is required.
  • At least 2 years minimum of previous molecular biology laboratory research experience and familiarity with the majority of the techniques listed above required.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to synthesize research findings for presentation in both oral and written formats.
  • At least 1-2 years minimum of previous experience and familiarity with handling of mice is required.
