The Field Medical Director (FMD), Medical Affairs, Ophthalmology, will function as a scientific and medical resource for the Medical Affairs department and the cross-functional team at Omeros. Reporting directly to the Head of Medical Affairs, the Director's primary responsibilities will be to lead the development and execution of the field medical strategy towards opinion leader engagement and medical education, in alignment with the overall brand/medical plan. The FMD will also contribute to the development of the overall brand strategy and tactical plans. The FMD will collaborate with the cross-functional medical affairs and extra-departmental teams.

This position will be responsible for engaging Key Opinion Leaders (KOL's), providing education about the disease state and product, and delivering qualitative insight from external experts and stakeholders to the cross-functional teams. The role will interface with multiple cross-functional teams including Medical Information, Medical Communication, Medical Affairs Operations, Commercial (Marketing, Sales, Market Access), Health Outcomes, as well as external partners and Key Opinion Leaders and physicians in the community. The FMD, Medical Affairs, Ophthalmology, will be a vital connector between external stakeholders and cross-functional teams from multiple departments at Omeros to help ensure the organization is reaching its corporate and brand goals and objectives.

Who is Omeros?

Omeros is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company committed to discovering, developing and commercializing small-molecule and protein therapeutics for large-market and orphan indications targeting inflammation, complement-mediated diseases, disorders of the central nervous system and immune-related diseases, including cancers. In addition to its commercial product OMIDRIA (phenylephrine and ketorolac intraocular solution) 1%/0.3%, Omeros has multiple phase 3 and phase 2 clinical-stage development programs focused on complement-mediated disorders and substance abuse. Omeros also has a diverse group of preclinical programs including GPR174, a novel target in immuno-oncology that modulates a new cancer immunity axis recently discovered by Omeros. Small-molecule inhibitors of GPR174 are part of Omeros' proprietary G proteincoupled receptor (GPCR) platform through which it controls 54 new GPCR drug targets and their corresponding compounds. The company also exclusively possesses a novel antibody-generating platform.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the identification, forge strong relationships, maintain ongoing effective engagements with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL's) for purposes of scientific exchange and collaboration
  • Develop and execute field medical strategy for stakeholder relations and engagement, dissemination of education and medical/scientific information to support the use and reimbursement of OMIDRIA
  • Provide support as needed to Market Access to ensure successful engagement and education of public and commercial managed market stakeholders
  • Serve on cross-functional teams as Medical Affairs representative and scientific expert; participate in cross-functional teams with the goal of developing and implementing integrated medical and commercial strategies for Omeros products
  • Lead and coordinate assigned projects for Medical Affairs team, as agreed upon with the Head of Medical Affairs
  • Collaborate with the cross-functional team within Medical Affairs in support of reactive material development to address healthcare provider and other customer questions
  • Collaborate with the evidence generation lead/team (HEOR and Market Access) in developing real world evidence in support of product reimbursement and life cycle
  • Collaborate with the Publication and Medical Education Lead to provide scientific support as needed for publication planning and execution; act as reviewer for some publications, posters, and presentations
  • Establish and nurture strategic alliances and partnerships as needed with internal and external stakeholders to include advocacy groups and congress leaderships
  • Collaborate and closely coordinate with Commercial teams to compliantly support their marketing efforts
  • Manage educational tactics in partnership with external vendors and/or stakeholders (i.e. grants, CME and IIS)
  • As needed, provide disease state and compound education to internal marketing and sales personnel
  • Collaborate with and provide scientific and clinical support and training for internal departments which may include Sales, Medical Science Liaisons, Clinical Operations, Research, Legal/Policy, and Investor Relations
  • Externally, the same level of collaboration and support is required for audiences such as health care providers, patient advocates, formulary and clinical guidelines decision makers
  • Exhibit leadership skills within and outside of the organization (including people skills, mentoring, presentation skills, and professional interaction)
  • Support high-quality execution of corporate-wide initiatives
Education, Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Required:

  • An advanced degree is required - MD, PhD, PharmD; sub-specialty training and/or clinical/extensive industry experience in ophthalmology is preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or equivalent with previous experience working with Medical Affairs teams is required
  • Must have experience and a history of successfully leading projects and managing cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including a strong leadership presence
  • Demonstrated proficiency in presenting clinical, non-clinical and real world evidence to external audiences
  • Experience in strategic and tactical planning
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders including the ability to tailor messages to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills to quickly build rapport and credibility with key external stakeholders as well as internal stakeholders
  • In-depth knowledge of study methodology, study data reviews and analysis
  • Passion for educating health professionals to optimize the delivery of medical care, including the appropriate use of pharmaceuticals

Travel Requirements:

  • ~ 60% overnight travel is required (US and international)
Physical Demands Required:

  • Intermittent physical activity including bending, reaching and/or pushing, pulling, or lifting to 40 lbs.
  • May encounter prolonged periods of sitting
  • May work around hazardous material
