Specialist, EHS is responsible for providing expertise and support to the Lansing site to ensure the health and safety of all employees and protection of the environment in compliance with regulatory standards. The Specialist, EHS will collaborate with all stakeholders to develop and continually improve systems to drive the safety culture toward realizing our goal of becoming an injury-free workplace.

  • Develop and implement EHS policies and programs, including written programs, training programs, and record-keeping to ensure compliance with regulatory compliance obligations and adherence to safe work practices at the site
  • Train and orient new hire employees in EHS policies and safe work practices
  • Lead and engage in incident and near miss investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective and protective measures driving the company toward a culture of zero incidents
  • Analyze and report data on incident and injury trends to drive meaningful action to prevent recurrence
  • Lead and conduct Job Safety Analysis (JSA's), hazard assessments, inspections, and audits to proactively identify and take action to reduce risk of injury and/or illness
  • Provide technical assistance and support to the global EHS team on the development and harmonization of global EHS policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Lead the Safety Integrated Systems Team (IST), Biosafety Committee, and Environmental Working Groups, focusing on the development and adherence to standard work
  • Oversee the contractor safety program, including the administration of contractor orientation, development of and adherence to safe work permit programs, conducting jobsite inspections, and working with the Contractor Management and Engineering teams to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations and safe work practices
  • Review, collaborate on, and approve operational Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for EHS compliance
  • Manage the company's occupational health programs, including the immunization policy, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, hearing conservation, and animal allergy programs
  • Conduct inspections and complete reports in accordance with environmental permit regulatory compliance obligations
  • Evaluate and provide technical expertise on the storage and use of chemical and biological materials in accordance with chemical, biological, occupational health, and laboratory safety programs and environmental management systems.
  • Maintain chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) databases, along with ensuring compliance with the site hazardous waste management program.
  • Serve as an alternate responsible official for the company's Select Agent program.

  • Bachelors degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, biological science, chemistry, environmental science, chemical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of environmental, health and safety experience, preferably in a biologics or chemical environment.
  • Experience in EHS program assessment and auditing.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task, remain flexible, and coordinate workload by priority in a fast-paced environment, focusing on providing exceptional customer service while adhering to quality standards.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • 2 - 3 years' experience with environmental compliance in maintaining wastewater and regulated solid waste management programs at a manufacturing facility.
  • 3 - 4 years' experience leading site EHS projects, initiatives, and driving cultural change regarding EHS in a manufacturing and biotechnical environment.
  • Experience in a cGMP environment preferred.
  • Experience with EHS Management System development and implementation (e.g., ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10) preferred.
  • CSP, CIH, RBP, or CHMM highly desirable, or alternatively to qualify for those professional certifications.
