Are you experienced in patent search with a focus in the pharmaceutical industry?

Ipsen is recruiting for a Patent Search Analyst who will be responsible for conducting all research in support of the Global Intellectual Property group's information needs. Reporting into the Head of Global Intellectual Property, the Patent Search Analyst will conduct searches related to patentability, freedom-to-operate and landscape while using a variety of available tools.

Your role will involve:
  • Conducting patentability, validity, freedom-to-operate, and landscape searches; performing preliminary analysis of search results; and reporting search results with value-added analysis to IP attorneys
  • Conducting searches of patent, scientific, technical, and business databases on the basis of keywords, control terms, CPC/IPC codes, chemical structure and/or biological sequences
  • Exercising independent judgment in formulating search queries, selecting from a wide variety of electronic databases and other resources, and refining search results
  • Performing other scientific, technical and legal literature reference searches per request of IP attorneys and staff
  • Monitoring third party patent applications, patent families, and legal status
  • Serving as primary liaison between Intellectual Property group and external providers of search tools and databases


In return, you will bring:
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry, or equivalent research experience; Ph.D. preferred
  • At least 2 years patent searching experience relating to the pharmaceutical industry
  • Must have up-to-date in-depth knowledge of relevant computer software, systems and databases related to patent and scientific literature searches
  • Significant experience performing patent and scientific literature searches using multiple search tools (STN, Questel) and databases, including patent searching using the U.S. and international patent classification systems and forward/reverse citation analysis
  • Strong expertise in searching chemical structure databases (CAS Registry, Derwent World Patent Index, Marpat)
  • Expertise in searching protein and nucleic acid sequences (e.g., CAS Registry, DGENE, PCTGEN, USGENE)
  • Strong background and/or research experience, with organic chemistry, peptide, and/or protein expertise
  • Knowledge of U.S. and foreign patent formats and examining procedures is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and/or other software tools used to present research results in easy-to-consult formats
  • Ability to understand detailed legal and scientific information presented verbally or in written documentation
  • Ability to review, analyze, and synthesize technical information and exercise independent judgment in formulating search queries, selecting from a wide variety of electronic databases and other resources, and refining and purging search results with high accuracy
  • Presentation skills and the ability to share information effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing while appropriately tailoring communication to the audience and adapting communication to non-native English speaking customers where needed. French and/or Chinese language skills a plus
  • High customer focus, initiative, flexibility, and ability to appropriately prioritize workload
