Position Summary

Adverum is looking for a Payroll Director based in Redwood City, CA to serve as a thought leader with a proven record of developing and executing payroll strategy and delivering scalable, employee-enabling payroll services. The Payroll Director will lead the transformation of an enterprise wide payroll process within a rapidly growing environment, provide oversight to daily payroll operations, and ensure Adverum’s payroll process is in compliance with internal controls, employment tax regulations, and applicable labor laws. The Director will create short-term and long-term strategies for continuous improvement in payroll operations.
Reporting to VP, Corporate Controller, the Payroll Director will handle all higher level tasks such as reviewing and approving payroll and will possess international experience both technical and governance experience. A strong partner to provide support to the HR and Accounting teams.
 
What You will Do

Operations
·       Deliver accurate and timely processing of the Company's payroll in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and legislative compliance requirements.
·       Audit payroll procedures to include earnings, garnishments, tax withholding, pay integration with state agencies as necessary, etc.
·       Ensure all regular and off-cycle payrolls are reconciled.
·       Manage payroll tax process and amended tax returns for federal, state, and local taxes.
·       Owner of payroll accounting. Be an integral part of month/quarter/year end close to reconcile payroll accounts and provide flux analysis.
·       Accountable for ensuring payroll systems are maintained, documented, and user access is granted in compliance with SOX requirements.
·       Serve as the subject matter expert for the payroll system platform (ADP WFN).

Compliance

·       Maintain confidentiality of any payroll, private employee information and ensures payroll information is secure.
·       Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as policies regarding payments of wages, tax withholding, garnishments, and employee elected deductions.
·       Responsible for maintaining and updating Payroll Process Narratives. Support walkthrough and test of controls surrounding payroll process.
·       Actively participate, maintain, and enforce internal control environment over the financial reporting.
·       Stay informed with the regulatory changes and implementation of various tax changes and work with business partners as needed.

Business Partnering and Leadership
·       Establish and effectively execute department strategy and goals.
·       Assist senior leadership in defining organizational goals and strategic plans related to system wide payroll operations.
·       Proactively function as a trusted advisor and serve as a contact from Payroll for business partners and stakeholders.
·       Develop a network of key resources to engage and consult with when working on solving complex issues. Must be able to interact and influence peers at all levels of the organization.
·       Promote a positive team environment. Provide effective leadership, oversight, coaching, and counseling to support staff.

Knowledge and Skills:
·       Production and delivery of global process maps, desk-top manuals, and documentation.
·       Must be a critical thinker; must have excellent analytical skills, the ability to use excellent judgment and resolve issues with dexterity and effective decision making.
·       The ideal candidate will be results-driven and must thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
·       High level of self-motivation, accountability, leadership, positive attitude, and strong work ethic.
·       Excellent communications skills: written, verbal, and presentation.

About You

·       Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
·       A minimum of 8 years of experience and in-depth knowledge of payroll accounting best practice. programs in a complex multi-national corporation.
·       Strong knowledge of US GAAP
·       A minimum of 4 years of leadership and people development experience.
·       A minimum of 4 years of experience with NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, or equivalent ERP systems.
·       Advanced proficiency with Microsoft tools (Excel, Outlook, Word, Visio, PowerPoint).
