Adverum is looking for a Senior Scientist to lead the AAV Purification Development for the Candidate Process Development (CPD) team at our Redwood City, CA office. The successful candidate will play a critical part in the development of a viral vector downstream platform processes and its application to Adverum’s gene therapy pipeline of products. The incumbent will be responsible for evaluating and developing latest AAV purification technology tool kit to implement the operational vision for CPD group. You will independently design and conduct experiments for multiple aspects of purification development activities, including column and chromatography (e.g., affinity, ion exchange), filtration and membrane separations (e.g., TFF, depth filtration), CsCl Ultracentrifugation, scale-up, and High Throughput (HTP) AAV purification strategies. This role reports into the Director, Head of Candidate Process Development and will be expected to work independently, manage projects, participate in cross-functional, multidisciplinary project teams.
 
This role requires strong collaborative Team focus, the ability to juggle immediate needs with long term goals, and an ability to be highly productive in a fluid, fast-paced and teamwork-oriented environment. Direct prior experience with AAV downstream unit operations is a plus.
What You'll Do
  • Investigate and evaluate novel technologies to improve current purification processes used for the pre-clinical and clinical manufacturing of adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors
  • Independently design and execute experiments (DOE) to generate optimum and robust purification processes
  • Develop AKTA chromatography as well as Ultracentrifugation based AAV purification processes
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Research, PD, Analytical development, and manufacturing sciences to understand the requirements and support them
  • Accurate documentation for experiments with regular updates to the internal & external teams
  • Write and review high quality technical development and technology transfer reports
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for the downstream purification process to internal and external partners.
  • Participate in scientific conferences and make contributions to scientific publications and patents

About You
  • Ph.D. in Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or appropriate technical discipline with 3+ yrs of relevant, industrial experience (M.S./B.S. in corresponding fields with 8+ yrs).
  • Prior experience and expertise working on the downstream purification of protein-based therapeutics and/or vaccines.  Prior experience working on the purification of AAV products is a plus.
  • A strong understanding of the fundamentals of chromatography and/or membrane separations
  • Hands-on experience with AKTA chromatography and filtration systems
  • Prior hands on experience with CsCl Ultracentrifugation methods
  • Experience with analytical methods for Biologics/AAV modalities is desirable but not required
  • Ability to generate, develop, and implement innovative ideas and deal with difficult scientific problems is essential
  • Desire to mentor and develop members of their team.
