HEAD OF MEDICAL AFFAIRS

Position Summary:

Global Blood Therapeutics is seeking a seasoned leader to oversee our Medical Affairs global function. The Head of Medical Affairs will be a member of the Research and Development Leadership Team. In collaboration with the Clinical Sciences team and other colleagues, the successful candidate will provide clinical and scientific leadership to support the optimization of GBT's clinical and commercial programs. This position reports to the Executive Vice President, R&D.

The successful candidate will be a senior leader with a proven track record of optimizing medical affairs strategies and leveraging medical perspectives into strategic product and medical plans to support the approval, commercialization, life cycle management of groundbreaking pharmaceuticals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage an effective, top-notch high functioning medical affairs team that serves its stakeholders on the project teams and aligned functions
  • Create and oversee the global medical outreach strategy and work closely with global key opinion leaders (KOLs)
  • Responsibility for post marketing and IST development strategy; strategic input into the design and development of late-stage clinical studies
  • Provide medical guidance and governance to commercial in support of product lifecycle
  • Facilitate communication across Research and Development stakeholders to improve existing and future product pipeline
  • Maintain understanding of competitors and clinical developments in relevant therapeutic areas by attending scientific meetings and tracking literature
  • Represent the company's strategies, plans, activities and programs to internal and external audiences
  • Help to establish and maintain collaborations with partners in academia, government, and industry
  • Actively assist in seeking product and/or technology alliances with appropriate pharmaceutical company partners to enhance or expedite the development of the company's assets
  • Oversee the development of a robust conference, publication, and scientific communication strategy to support GBT product development


Qualifications:

  • MD preferred, advanced degree required (PhD, Pharm D, or MD)
  • 17+ years of medical affairs experience required, including global market and recent product launches
  • 8+ years of people management experience with proven ability to coach and develop team members
  • Ability to influence clinical development and commercial programs
  • Proven ability to optimize development of a drug for commercialization based upon medical unmet needs and value of the program
  • Sophisticated understanding of evolving global regulatory, medical practice and economic environments and impact on the value of GBT programs
  • Ability to execute Medical Affairs plans in the areas of Thought Leader Development, commercialization support, and real word evidence generation and communication
  • Proven leadership in KOL engagement and advocacy building, preferably in rare or orphan diseases
  • Proven track record in leading the generation and communication of real-world data throughout the physician community
  • Proven track record of fostering creativity, productivity, execution with a sense of urgency, teamwork, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter with strong interpersonal and analytical skills, high ethical standards and proven ability to work effectively with Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Commercial and other internal stakeholders
