Adverum is looking for an Associate Scientist / Engineer II, Pilot Process Development (PPD), Upstream Line, to join the Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) team at our Redwood City, CA office.  This position will report into the Head of the PPD group and will be a key team member to help advance Adverum’s lead program, ADVM-022, to commercial launch and our move our pipeline products into and through the clinic. 

In this role, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting with the planning and carrying out of day to day activities associated with the upstream production of AAV based products and expansion of baculovirus seed stocks, from small flask to 200 and 1000 L production scales.  These activities will include thaw & recovery of cell and viral banks, expansion and maintenance of said banks, infection of the production bioreactor to produce AAV, maintenance and monitoring of the production bioreactor, and harvest.  This role will also include set-up and cleaning of required equipment, sample taking and analysis for monitoring of cell cultures, and appropriate record keeping of activities.  Finally, as the incumbent demonstrates a mastery of the upstream operations, additional cross-functional training in other unit ops, such as downstream and fill, would be provided for high performers looking to expand their technical abilities.

Given the breadth of activities involved, this role requires the ability to quickly learn and master new operations on the floor, good independent organization skills and a strong team focused perspective.  The incumbent is expected to work well with others as part of a cohesive unit, able to adapt to a fast paced and changing environment, and be an enthusiastic learner.  Prior experience working in a biologics products based pilot plant, or in an upstream process development role, is a plus.
What you'll do:
  • Carry out day to day activities associated with large scale upstream runs.
  • Thaw, expand and maintain cell and viral banks.
  • Monitor said cultures through sample taking and analysis.
  • Set-up, maintain and clean required upstream equipment.
  • Assist with planning and procurement activities associated with large scale runs.
  • Work with the Upstream Line of PPD to evaluate large scale development activities and process optimization improvements, and then execute on said experiments at large scale.
  • Openly collaborate with members of other teams on upstream related activities, including Technology Transfer, Upstream Process Development and Candidate Process Development.
  • Once technical mastery is demonstrated, assist with training of other Upstream Line PPD team members and with technology transfer as needed.
  • Ensure safe work place in compliance with company and EHS rules and regulations.
  • Follow good documentation practices to maintain accurate records through lab notebooks and data logging.
  • Draft, edit and finalize technical documents such as SOPs, batch records and campaign reports.

About you:
  • B.S./M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or appropriate technical discipline with 3+ yrs of relevant, industrial experience.
  • Prior experience in the production or process development of protein-based therapeutics and/or vaccines.  Prior experience working in upstream process development or a biologics pilot plant setting is a plus.
  • Hands on experience working with cell culture, aseptic techniques, shake flask and/or bioreactors.
  • Experience working with and drafting SOPs, batch records and protocols.
  • Desire to be a strong team player and partner of the Upstream Line PPD team.
  • Good independent organization skills and ability to organize one’s own work and priorities.
  • Strong desire to learn new technologies and skill sets.
